Pediatric Constipation Surgery Clinic(番禺院区)
Congenital megacolon (aganglionosis, or Hirschsprung disease) is one of the most common gastrointestinal malformations in pediatric surgery and is characterized by constipation. Typical signs include intermittent or progressive abdominal distension and difficulty passing stool; severe cases show signs of partial intestinal obstruction. Delayed treatment can lead to intestinal perforation, peritonitis and sepsis due to severe distension, with rapid deterioration and ultimately death. Lower gastrointestinal barium contrast imaging is currently among the most important and accurate examinations. Early diagnosis can be relatively difficult in newborns and young infants because onset is early, the course is short and signs and symptoms are atypical; in particular, short-segment and common forms may not yet show obvious pathological changes. The modified Soave operation (transanal definitive surgery for megacolon) is designed to better match pathological anatomy; the hospital states that the procedure has become simpler and safer, with markedly fewer postoperative complications and sequelae.
