Neurosurgery Department 2
The Department of Neurosurgery II at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University has strong technical capabilities and extensive diagnostic and treatment experience. It undertakes, for the region, the clinical diagnosis and treatment, scientific research and teaching, and emergency rescue of patients with acute, critical, and severe conditions involving intracranial tumors, cerebrovascular diseases, craniocerebral trauma, and all types of neurosurgical diseases. The department currently has 2 chief physicians, 1 associate chief physician, 4 attending physicians, and 1 resident physician. Among them, 5 hold doctoral degrees and 2 hold master’s degrees. The nursing staff totals 16, including 15 with the professional title of nurse practitioner or above; all have at least a bachelor’s degree. The department has 27 fixed beds, including 2 neurocritical care unit beds. It performs approximately 900-plus operations annually, and the ward has more than 1100 discharges each year.
The hospital is equipped with a dedicated neurosurgical hybrid (combined) operating room and a neurocritical care unit. It has multiple German Zeiss fluorescence microscope systems, high-end large-scale digital subtraction angiography systems from Philips, Siemens, and other manufacturers, as well as a range of other advanced medical equipment. BK ultrasound is seamlessly integrated with the Brain-Lab neuronavigation system, enabling intraoperative ultrasound navigation and precise localization of lesions.
The department currently performs endovascular embolization and craniotomy clipping for intracranial aneurysms; endovascular treatment and craniotomy resection of cerebrovascular malformations; mechanical thrombectomy for acute occlusion of major intracranial vessels; carotid endarterectomy; stent angioplasty for carotid stenosis; interventional procedures for intracranial vascular stenosis; resection of intracranial and intraspinal tumors; microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm; and surgery for craniocerebral trauma and cerebral hemorrhage, among other routine procedures. It also performs numerous highly sophisticated, major, complex, and difficult Level IV procedures, including acoustic neuroma surgery with facial and hearing preservation, giant thalamic cavernous malformations, third-ventricle germ cell tumors, clival chordomas, clival meningiomas, foramen magnum meningiomas, and high cervical intramedullary spinal cord gliomas. Its superb surgical skills have given many desperate patients a new lease on life and have earned unanimous praise from patients, their families, and professionals in the neurosurgical field.
Our department is the only one in the region to perform hybrid surgery for multiple carotid stenoses; direct and indirect intracranial and extracranial vascular revascularization for moyamoya disease, such as superficial temporal artery–MCA branch anastomosis and encephalo-duro-arterio-synangiosis (EDAS); skull-base tumor resection; spinal angiography; and other procedures. Its highly sophisticated technologies continue to reach new heights.
In addition, the department has established a “Health Cottage,” organized free medical consultation activities, and created the WeChat public account “Stroke New Vision” and the WeChat “Doctor–Patient Communication Group” to provide continuing medical services for discharged patients. It has organized the “Chinese Medical Doctor Association Symposium on Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery” and proposed the “minimally invasive neurosurgery concept,” benefiting patients and the general public. It has also organized the “Stroke Appropriate Technology Symposium,” further promoting the development of stroke centers in hospitals throughout Dalian and improving the construction of the Dalian regional stroke medical alliance.
The Department of Neurosurgery II continues to strive for progress and move forward, and has received such internal hospital honors as the “Department Rapid Growth Award” and the “Outpatient Service Excellence Award” on multiple occasions. With the principle of “placing patients at the center and serving them wholeheartedly,” the department’s medical and nursing staff incorporate familial warmth and compassion into every detail of their service, protect every life with the responsibility of medical professionals, and safeguard the health of all patients.
