Myopia Correction

The Department of Refractive Surgery follows the benchmark requirements for laser vision correction surgery set by the US FDA as its guiding standard. It has introduced the German ZEISS VisuMax full-femtosecond laser system and MEL 90 excimer laser system, and performs full-femtosecond SMILE, half-femtosecond procedures, excimer laser surgery, and ICL lens implantation. Based on preoperative examination data, it develops targeted surgical plans for different individuals.
The department is led by President Yao Yong (professor, chief physician, and supervisor of master’s students). The surgical team includes Chief Physician Lu Shouquan (one of the early doctors in China to perform laser corneal refractive surgery; he has completed tens of thousands of refractive procedures) and Associate Chief Physician Wu Juan (PhD from the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University; previously underwent refractive surgery training in Germany). All refractive surgeries in the department are performed as lead surgeon by doctors with the title of associate chief physician or above, while difficult cases receive consultation support from the consultant panel.
A systematic preoperative examination is the first line of defense for refractive surgery safety. The department completes evaluations according to Hong Kong-style graded refraction standards: ZEISS ATLAS 9000 corneal topography is used to obtain anterior-surface curvature and astigmatism; Pentacam anterior-segment tomography is used to reconstruct the full corneal thickness and posterior-surface morphology, with both datasets used to screen for keratoconus; iTrace visual-quality analysis quantifies whole-eye wavefront aberrations and combines them with dark-adapted pupil measurements to optimize optical-zone design; ICL candidates undergo optical biometry to calculate lens power; and highly myopic patients undergo a detailed examination of the peripheral retina after pupil dilation.
Discontinuation of contact-lens wear (soft lenses for 1–2 weeks, rigid lenses for 3–4 weeks, OK lenses for 3 months, or as directed by the physician) and a stable refractive prescription for approximately the past 1–2 years are prerequisites for entering the surgical process. The department has doctors personally conduct consultations and surgery, with the surgical technique determined according to the ocular condition. A Class-100 laminar-flow purified operating room and a standardized postoperative follow-up system provide assurance for surgical safety and long-term visual quality. The specific choice of surgical technique and treatment plan shall be based on the preoperative examination results and the physician’s assessment.
