Traditional Chinese Medicine Surgery Department
The Department of Traditional Chinese Surgery at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital was established when the hospital was founded. Building on the diagnosis and treatment of traditional Chinese surgical diseases, the department has developed distinctive strengths in the integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment of thyroid diseases, breast diseases, wounds, and other conditions. It is particularly a national leader in treating Hashimoto’s disease, subacute thyroiditis, and patients after thyroid cancer surgery with traditional Chinese medicine. In 1989, Professor Wu Ruimin developed four hospital preparations for thyroid diseases, which have been used ever since and have earned the trust and praise of many patients. The department has undertaken multiple provincial- and ministerial-level research projects on the traditional Chinese medicine treatment of breast hyperplasia, thyroid cancer, and subacute thyroiditis. Director Xia Zhongyuan was one of the drafters and developers of the industry standard Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Qi Goiter (Thyroid Nodules) with Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The department head is Xia Zhongyuan. The department currently has 2 chief physicians, 1 associate chief physician, 1 attending physician, and 2 resident physicians. Medical specialties:
1. Integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment of thyroid diseases: The department diagnoses and treats Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, thyroid nodules, subacute thyroiditis, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and patients after thyroid cancer surgery. The department has in-house preparations for thyroid diseases, including Yiyang Pills for Hashimoto-related hypothyroidism, Pingqian Pills for hyperthyroidism, Xiaoying Pills for thyroid enlargement and nodules, and Lihuo Pills, among others. Subacute thyroiditis is treated with oral traditional Chinese medicine alone, combined with external application of Purple Swelling-Reducing Ointment, with significant results. Integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can improve efficacy while reducing the dosage and adverse reactions of Western medicines. Traditional Chinese medicine treatment of Hashimoto’s disease helps lower antithyroid antibody levels and inhibit thyroid enlargement, among other effects. For patients after thyroid cancer surgery, comprehensive treatment including traditional Chinese medicine can enhance immune function, regulate endocrine disorders, and prevent recurrence and metastasis.
2. Traditional Chinese medicine treatment of breast diseases: The department operates a specialized breast disease clinic and a breast disease examination and treatment room. It uses oral and external traditional Chinese medicines, breast therapy devices, manual breast drainage, traditional Chinese medicine dressing changes, acupuncture, and other treatments for breast hyperplasia, breast nodules, acute mastitis, plasma cell mastitis, granulomatous mastitis, insufficient postpartum lactation, patients after breast cancer surgery, gynecomastia, and other conditions. In particular, for difficult-to-treat plasma cell mastitis, granulomatous mastitis, and similar conditions, non-surgical traditional Chinese medicine treatments such as medicated-thread therapy, wet-dressing therapy, and topical application therapy can effectively promote the disappearance of masses and wound healing while reducing damage to the breast contour. The topical patch Rujiesan developed by the department can effectively relieve breast hyperplasia and breast nodules.
3. Traditional Chinese medicine treatment of chronic wounds: The department diagnoses and treats erysipelas of the lower limbs, chronic skin ulcers, diabetic foot, lower-limb venous ulcers, pressure sores, scalds, nonhealing postoperative wounds, and other conditions. Traditional Chinese medicine necrotic-tissue removal and debridement techniques, together with various distinctive preparations such as Jinhuang Ointment, Furong Ointment, Pulian Ointment, Kuiyang Oil, and Shengji Yuhong Ointment, are used to control wound infection and promote wound healing.
