Cardiology
Department Development: The Department of Cardiology is a key discipline of the National Health and Family Planning Commission and China-Japan Friendship Hospital. The department was established in 1984. It was among the earliest units in China to perform coronary angiography and right-heart catheterization, and is one of the earlier units in Beijing and nationwide to carry out interventional treatment. Over the 30 years since its establishment, under the leadership of successive department directors Qiang Ruichun, Hu Zhenxiang, Ke Yuannan, Wang Yong, Zheng Jingang, and others, the department has continued to develop and expand, reaching an advanced domestic level in medical care, teaching, and research. It currently has 112 beds, more than 4,000 discharges annually, and more than 3,000 interventional treatment procedures annually.
Department Personnel: The department director is Zheng Jingang, and the deputy department directors are Sun Yihong and Ren Jingyi, all with extensive experience in clinical care, research, teaching, and management. The head nurses are Xiao Zhu, Wang Jian, and Gao Si; there are 62 nurses.
The department currently has 7 chief physicians, 12 associate chief physicians, 10 attending physicians, 9 resident physicians, and 14 technicians. Those holding doctoral degrees account for 70%.
Professor Zheng Jingang, director of the department, is a nationally renowned expert in interventional treatment of coronary heart disease. He also serves in several academic positions, including member of the Expert Committee on Interventional Cardiology of the China Association of Chinese Medicine, council member of the Cardiology Specialist Branch of the Beijing Medical Doctor Association, and chairman of the Northern CTO Club.
Professor Wang Yong is a nationally renowned expert in interventional cardiology, deputy chair of the Expert Committee on Interventional Cardiology of the China Association of Chinese Medicine, and director of the Coronary Heart Disease Intervention Specialty Base of the National Cardiovascular Disease Interventional Diagnosis and Treatment Technology Training Program.
Chief Expert Professor Ke Yuannan served as a standing committee member of the 5th, 6th, and 7th terms of the Cardiovascular Disease Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a council member of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, an expert member of the Cardiovascular Disease Branch of the Chinese Medical Association (FCSC), an adviser to the Heart Failure Group, and a senior expert of the Cardiovascular Disease Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. He specializes mainly in the diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of complex and difficult cardiac diseases, as well as clinical research on the development of new cardiovascular drugs.
Outpatient and Inpatient Facilities: The department operates specialty clinics for coronary heart disease, hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmia, dyslipidemia, thrombotic diseases, and coronary heart disease in women.
There are a total of 95 inpatient beds, including 17 coronary care unit beds.
The department has a cardiac function laboratory, echocardiography room, electrocardiography room, cardiac catheterization laboratory, and cardiovascular basic research laboratory.
Introduction to Diagnostic and Treatment Equipment: The Department of Cardiology currently has medical equipment including 2 angiography systems (PILIPHSFD10; GEinnovaIQ), a CARTO three-dimensional mapping system, a VOLCANO intravascular ultrasound machine, OCTC7 (optical coherence tomography scanner), a GEVIVIDE9 cardiac ultrasound system, and a PILIPHSiE33 cardiac ultrasound system.
Departmental Diagnostic and Treatment Specialties:
1. Coronary heart disease: Our department was one of the earliest units in China to perform coronary angiography and one of the earliest in China to establish a green channel for acute myocardial infarction. In addition to routinely providing interventional diagnosis and treatment for coronary heart disease and diagnosis and treatment of acute myocardial infarction, we continually challenge complex lesions. The interventional treatment of complex lesions such as chronic total occlusion lesions and calcified lesions is at the leading national level. We carry out ECMO-supported interventional treatment in Beijing. Relying on the Chest Pain Center of China-Japan Friendship Hospital, the emergency green channel for the emergency treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarction is smooth and efficient.
2. Structural heart disease: We routinely perform closure of atrial septal defects and ventricular septal defects, as well as left atrial appendage closure.
3. Heart failure and device therapy: We provide various conventional and special cardiac pacemakers, including ICD and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).
4. Pacing therapy: We perform conventional single- and dual-chamber cardiac pacing, active-electrode His bundle pacing, ventricular septal pacing, pacemaker lead extraction, and other procedures. We have extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of rare and difficult diseases such as Brugada syndrome, long QT syndrome, and sudden cardiac death syndrome.
5. Tachyarrhythmias: We provide interventional diagnosis and treatment of various conventional and complex arrhythmias (radiofrequency ablation or cryoablation), including paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, atrial tachycardia, atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation, premature ventricular contractions, and pathological and functional ventricular tachycardia, as well as percutaneous left atrial appendage closure for patients with atrial fibrillation.
6. Hypertension: On the basis of multidisciplinary collaboration, we provide individualized diagnosis for patients with resistant hypertension. We have accumulated extensive experience in the screening and differential diagnosis of secondary hypertension, including the diagnosis of renal hypertension, renovascular hypertension, primary aldosteronism, pheochromocytoma, and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, and have established a standardized and comprehensive process for the diagnosis and treatment of secondary hypertension. We conduct genetic diagnosis of monogenic hereditary hypertension.
7. Thrombotic diseases: We provide long-term management and individualized treatment of antithrombotic therapy, as well as screening, diagnosis, and treatment of thrombophilia.
8. Cardiac ultrasound: In addition to routine examinations, we perform special examinations including transesophageal echocardiography, cardiac contrast echocardiography, stress echocardiography, intraoperative ultrasound monitoring, and fetal echocardiography. We are at the leading domestic and even international level, particularly in right-heart assessment for pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary embolism, myocardial function evaluation, and complex and difficult cardiovascular diseases.
9. Noninvasive cardiac examinations: The Department of Cardiology is equipped with advanced instruments and routinely performs transthoracic echocardiography (two-dimensional and three-dimensional), transesophageal echocardiography (two-dimensional and three-dimensional), left-heart contrast echocardiography, right-heart contrast echocardiography, myocardial perfusion imaging, treadmill exercise testing, and arterial stiffness indicator testing.
Current Specialty Clinics: Coronary heart disease, hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmia, dyslipidemia, thrombotic diseases and anticoagulant therapy, and coronary heart disease in women.
Department Research Achievements: In recent years, the department has received 11 national-level research grants, including 1 major project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 6 general projects, and 2 young investigator projects. It has received 9 provincial-, ministerial-, and domestic and international collaborative projects, more than 10 hospital-level projects, and more than 20 multicenter clinical research projects. It has published more than 20 SCI papers, obtained 3 patents, and served as chief editor in publishing 5 monographs.
Department Teaching: Our department is a cardiac intervention training base (of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and the China Association of Chinese Medicine) and a Beijing standardized residency training base. It is also a graduate training site for Peking Union Medical College, Peking University Health Science Center, and Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. It currently has 4 doctoral supervisors and 4 master's supervisors, undertakes extensive teaching duties and the training of internal medicine residents and visiting physicians, and has organized numerous national- and municipal-level continuing education programs.
