Specialized Diagnosis and Treatment
(1) TCM Classical Formulas: The department’s core specialty is diagnosis and treatment with TCM classical formulas. It is the host institution of the Feng Shilun Renowned Veteran TCM Physician Studio and also has a China-Japan Friendship Hospital branch of the Hu Xishu Famous Physician Research Studio.
Both the Feng Shilun Renowned Veteran TCM Physician Studio and the China-Japan Friendship Hospital branch of the Hu Xishu Famous Physician Research Studio are part of the construction project of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine’s “3+3” TCM Heritage Program. Professor Feng Shilun, an academic successor of Hu Xishu, a renowned Chinese clinician specializing in classical formulas, and a nationally renowned TCM master in the capital, serves as the chief supervising expert. The department’s team systematically carries forward the Hu Xishu–Feng Shilun academic system of classical formulas and has opened up new directions in classical-formula diagnosis and treatment.
(2) Specialized Andrology Conditions: The department runs a specialized outpatient clinic for TCM classical formulas and adheres to the classical-formula diagnostic and treatment concept of “Six Channels–Eight Principles–Formula–Pattern.” Classical formulas are applied flexibly to common andrological diseases such as male infertility, prostate diseases, and sexual dysfunction, as well as difficult conditions such as sleep-related painful erections, elevated sperm DNA fragmentation, anejaculation, and corpus cavernosum injury. This has created a distinctive diagnostic and treatment approach characterized by minimal medication, clear efficacy, and precise pattern differentiation. The department also combines this approach with external TCM therapies such as acupoint stimulation and heat therapy to warm the channels and unblock the collaterals, thereby treating internal and external aspects simultaneously and achieving significant clinical results.
Outpatient Clinics and Facilities
The department operates specialized outpatient clinics for male infertility, chronic prostatitis, premature ejaculation, sperm DNA damage, elevated PSA, TCM prostate diseases, and TCM classical formulas. It has an independent andrology functional examination room and semen collection room, is equipped with professional diagnostic and treatment equipment for prostate diseases and sexual dysfunction, can perform systematic and comprehensive specialized andrology examinations, and provides distinctive Chinese and Western external therapies such as acupoint stimulation, heat therapy to warm the channels and unblock the collaterals, and biofeedback therapy.
Diagnostic and Treatment Features
1. Male Infertility and Preconception Assessment
The department has established a comprehensive system for examining, assessing, and treating male reproductive function. It can perform automated semen analysis; sperm morphology and spermatogenic cell cytology examinations; reproductive tract infection screening; reproductive endocrine hormone testing; reproductive system ultrasonography; sperm DNA fragmentation testing; Y-chromosome microdeletion testing; and other comprehensive examinations. Sperm morphology and spermatogenic cell cytology examinations are core technologies of the department, which undertakes consultation work for hospitals throughout the country. Treatment combines TCM classical-formula theory with Western anti-infective, antioxidant, and hormonal-regulation regimens, together with surgical treatment such as high ligation of the spermatic veins, to provide individualized comprehensive care.
2. Elevated Sperm Fragmentation Rate
An elevated sperm DNA fragmentation rate (DFI) is an important cause of male infertility, spontaneous miscarriage, and assisted reproductive failure. In addition to routine semen analysis and sperm morphology examinations, the department routinely performs sperm DNA fragmentation testing and conducts a comprehensive assessment of the etiology in combination with reproductive endocrine hormone testing, reproductive system ultrasonography, and other examinations. Treatment combines TCM classical-formula theory with Western antioxidant therapy and lifestyle intervention to effectively reduce the sperm DNA fragmentation rate, improve sperm quality, and increase the success rates of natural conception and assisted reproduction.
3. Diagnosis and Treatment of Prostate Diseases
The department strictly follows international guidelines to conduct systematic examinations, including urinalysis, routine examination of prostatic fluid, pathogen culture, ultrasonography, and CPSI and IPSS scale scoring, to perform precise classification of conditions such as elevated PSA, chronic prostatitis, and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Individualized regimens combining Chinese and Western medications with extracorporeal heat therapy, biofeedback therapy, and lifestyle guidance effectively relieve clinical symptoms and significantly improve patients’ quality of life. For patients with elevated PSA, on the basis of standardized examinations and risk-stratification assessment, the department uses the advantages of TCM pattern differentiation and treatment to provide TCM treatment. Combined with regular re-examination and follow-up management, this improves the inflammatory state of the prostate and relieves related symptoms.
4. Diagnosis and Treatment of Sexual Dysfunction and Repair of Corpus Cavernosum Injury
The department has established a comprehensive male sexual-function assessment system and conducts specialized examinations, including penile rigidity measurement, color Doppler ultrasonography, nerve sensitivity testing, nocturnal penile erection function recording, and IIEF-5 and CIPE scale scoring, to clarify the etiological classification. Treatment uses Western medications such as PDE-5 inhibitors and androgen supplementation, combined with TCM classical-formula methods, millimeter-wave acupoint therapy, psychological counseling, and other comprehensive approaches to effectively improve erectile function and prolong ejaculation time. For corpus cavernosum injury, the department provides integrated Chinese and Western medicine repair treatment, comprehensively applying medication, physical therapy, rehabilitation training, and other methods to promote structural repair and functional recovery of the corpus cavernosum and improve erectile function.
5. Acupuncture Treatment for Andrological Diseases
The department provides acupuncture treatment for andrological diseases. Experienced physicians select acupoints according to pattern differentiation and comprehensively apply filiform-needle acupuncture, electroacupuncture, moxibustion, acupoint stimulation, and other therapies. By regulating the zang-fu organs, unblocking the channels and collaterals, and harmonizing qi and blood, these methods are used as adjunctive treatment for andrological diseases such as retrograde ejaculation, chronic prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, sexual dysfunction, and oligoasthenozoospermia. They are particularly suitable for patients whose response to medication is inadequate or who should not take medication over the long term. Acupuncture is simple to perform and has few side effects. Combined with oral Chinese medicine and physical therapy, it treats internal and external aspects simultaneously and can further improve clinical efficacy.
Research and Teaching
The department has outstanding research strength. In recent years, it has led 9 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, 1 Beijing Natural Science Foundation project, 1 project of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 Capital Medical Development Research Fund project, and 4 hospital-level projects.
In teaching, the department has trained more than 30 master’s and doctoral students, many of whom have received honors including the National Scholarship for Graduate Students and the title of Outstanding Graduate of Beijing. Since 2006, it has undertaken professional-course teaching and clinical instruction in TCM surgery for master’s and undergraduate students at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. Since 2012, it has served as the TCM surgery rotation department of the Beijing standardized residency training base and receives physicians from all over the country for continuing training throughout the year. The department participated in compiling the 13th and 14th Five-Year Plan textbook Chinese Andrology, contributed to 3 national-level guidelines, and contributed to 1 Beijing continuing-education textbook.
