Liver Disease Center
The Liver Disease Center was founded in 1993 by Professor Wang Bao’en, a renowned Chinese internist and gastroenterology specialist. It is an important component of the National Clinical Medical Research Center for Digestive Diseases and the National Key Laboratory of Digestive Health, and is also the Clinical Diagnosis, Treatment and Research Center for Cirrhosis and Portal Hypertension at Capital Medical University.
The Center integrates clinical diagnosis and treatment with research innovation, and has developed a distinctive direction centered on the diagnosis and treatment of difficult liver diseases and the comprehensive management of portal hypertension. On the basis of standardized diagnosis and treatment of common liver diseases (chronic hepatitis B/C, fatty liver disease, drug-induced liver injury, etc.), it focuses on the precision diagnosis and individualized treatment of difficult and rare liver diseases such as autoimmune liver diseases and hereditary metabolic liver diseases, and is at the domestic forefront in the interventional treatment of portal hypertension and its complications.
The First Department of Liver Diseases completes more than 1000 pathological diagnoses of difficult liver diseases annually and performs more than 200 interventional procedures of various types, including 70–80 TIPS procedures and 60–70 transjugular liver biopsies (TJLB). It also has extensive experience in the interventional treatment of vascular complications related to liver transplantation, making it an influential center in China for consultation on difficult liver diseases and for the interventional diagnosis and treatment of portal hypertension. The Second Department of Liver Diseases (Department of Severe Liver Diseases) has an independent liver disease intensive care unit (ICU), can routinely provide advanced life-support techniques such as artificial liver support and ECMO, and focuses on the rescue and treatment of acute and critically ill patients with liver disease.
Leveraging the advantages of the hospital’s national-level disciplinary platforms, the Center brings together multidisciplinary teams from gastroenterology, imaging, liver transplantation, and other specialties to build an integrated “imaging–pathology–molecular” precision diagnostic system. It integrates multiple treatment modalities, including medication, endoscopy, interventional therapy, and transplantation, to provide full-chain diagnosis and treatment plans for patients with difficult and rare liver diseases, cirrhosis and portal hypertension, liver tumors, and severe liver diseases.
Over the past ten years, the Center has undertaken more than 60 national and provincial/ministerial scientific research projects, with cumulative research funding of approximately RMB 180 million, and has received multiple national and provincial/ministerial science and technology awards. The Center adheres to the integrated development of clinical practice and research, actively advances the development of research-oriented wards and international collaboration, and has formed a high-level team coordinating medical care, education, and research.
The Liver Disease Center has always upheld the philosophy of “patients first.” Based on multidisciplinary collaboration and full-cycle management, it is committed to building a leading liver disease diagnosis and treatment center in China, covering the full spectrum from chronic liver disease to acute and critical liver disease and from common diseases to rare diseases.
