The Department of Gynecology of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University was founded in 1898. In 1979, it became one of China’s first authorized sites for master’s-degree postgraduate education, and in 2009 it became a doctoral training institution. It established a gynecology postdoctoral research station, the Shandong Provincial Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Pelvic-Floor Diseases, the Shandong Provincial Laboratory for Reproductive Protection in Gynecological Diseases, the Qingdao Key Laboratory of Cervical Diseases, and the Shandong Peninsula Center for the Diagnosis, Treatment and Consultation of Gynecological Tumors and Difficult Diseases. It has developed into an influential domestic department integrating medical care, education and research. It was named a “Qingdao Characteristic Specialty” in 2002, received the title “National Women’s Civilized Post” in 2007, was designated a “Qingdao Key Discipline” in 2008, and was designated a “Shandong Provincial Clinical Key Specialty” in 2013 and 2020. In 2022, it was designated a Qingdao municipal-level clinical key specialty and approved as the Shandong branch of the National Clinical Medical Research Center for Obstetric and Gynecological Diseases and a pilot center for national standardized diagnosis-and-treatment quality control of ovarian cancer. In 2023, it was approved as a pilot center for national standardized diagnosis-and-treatment quality control of cervical cancer and a member institution for training gynecologic endoscopists under the national Belt and Road initiative. It has repeatedly been named one of the hospital’s “Top Ten Departments.” Since its establishment, the department has undertaken the diagnosis and treatment of gynecological diseases throughout the Jiaodong Peninsula and surrounding areas, including Rizhao, Weifang and Yantai, and receives critically ill and difficult patients from across China and from overseas. Its specialties cover gynecologic oncology, gynecologic endocrinology, general gynecology, female pelvic-floor diseases, surgical treatment of infertility, family planning and other fields.
Through the unremitting efforts of several generations, the department has achieved leapfrog development in scale, medical services, specialty structure, academic standards, talent development and medical equipment, and has made notable achievements in medical care, teaching and research.
II. Talent Structure
The department has strong human resources and has developed into a comprehensive, high-level medical, teaching and research team led by doctoral supervisors and supported by highly qualified young and middle-aged technical professionals. It currently has 75 full-time physicians, including 21 physicians with senior professional titles, 34 doctoral-degree holders, 4 doctoral supervisors and 23 master’s supervisors. Its talent structure is rational. Academic leaders are energetic, and are doctoral-degree holders with senior professional titles who are recognized in relevant academic fields for high academic attainment, outstanding achievements and the ability to lead the discipline toward its planned goals.
III. Specialty Features
Centered on medical quality, the department adopts advanced domestic and international diagnostic and treatment experience and develops distinctive specialties, forming a modern department with comprehensive multidisciplinary development. It has 266 beds in operation, more than 16,000 discharges annually, more than 11,000 operations annually and more than 360,000 outpatient visits annually. Main services include: ① comprehensive treatment of gynecologic malignant tumors, including cytoreductive surgery and chemotherapy for ovarian cancer; surgery for cervical cancer, including radical hysterectomy plus pelvic lymph-node dissection; neoadjuvant chemotherapy and/or uterine-artery embolization chemotherapy for cervical cancer; staging surgery and postoperative adjuvant treatment for endometrial cancer; surgery for vulvar cancer; and standardized chemotherapy for gestational trophoblastic tumors; ② diagnosis and treatment of common gynecologic diseases, including total hysterectomy and myomectomy for uterine fibroids; drug treatment of adenomyosis, placement of an intrauterine contraceptive device or intrauterine sustained-release system, total hysterectomy, partial hysterectomy and uterine reconstruction; diagnosis and treatment of cervical diseases, including cervical conization and loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP); and management of pregnancy-related diseases, including ectopic pregnancy, cesarean-scar pregnancy and painless induced abortion; ③ laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery, including laparoscopic radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer, laparoscopic nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer, laparoscopic staging surgery for endometrial cancer, laparoscopic total hysterectomy, laparoscopic cervical cerclage, myomectomy, ovarian-tumor stripping and treatment of ectopic pregnancy; and hysteroscopic septum resection, hysteroscopic adhesiolysis, myomectomy, endometrial-polyp resection and endometrial resection, providing individualized minimally invasive treatment. Compared with traditional surgery, laparoscopic radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer, nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy and laparoscopic staging surgery for endometrial cancer greatly shorten hospitalization, reduce postoperative suffering, accelerate recovery and lower the complication rate, producing good social and economic benefits. Laparoscopic cervical cerclage is also suitable for patients in whom transvaginal cerclage has failed, helping many patients with cervical insufficiency realize their dream of having children; ④ the department houses the Shandong Provincial Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Pelvic-Floor Diseases and provides treatment plans for female urinary incontinence, uterine prolapse, vaginal prolapse, rectal prolapse and other conditions, including pelvic-floor reconstruction, tension-free midurethral sling surgery, laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy and laparoscopic paravaginal repair, bringing relief to patients long troubled by these conditions and reluctant to seek medical care; ⑤ it also cooperates with the Reproductive Center to provide surgical treatment and other services for infertility patients, and operates outpatient clinics for menopausal endocrine diseases and cervical-disease diagnosis, providing high-quality services.
Technical specialty: approximately 160 da Vinci procedures have been performed, mainly for malignant-tumor surgery and surgery related to complex pelvic-floor dysfunction; the number and difficulty index of these procedures rank among the highest in the province.
IV. Research and Teaching
Research has also achieved notable results. Research is central to discipline development and innovative advancement. Staff persist in research innovation, participate in academic seminars and research while completing busy clinical and teaching duties, follow the latest academic directions, continuously introduce advanced medical equipment and technical concepts, improve technical standards and postgraduate supervision, and strengthen discipline development. During the past five years, 6 new technologies and projects were approved; more than 30 research projects were established; the department participated in compiling more than 20 books and more than 10 expert consensuses; obtained more than 20 authorized invention patents and utility-model patents; and published more than 100 SCI papers, with the highest impact factor reaching 12.6. It received 1 second prize of the Shandong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, 4 second prizes and 1 third prize of the Qingdao Science and Technology Progress Award. The department supports and encourages young physicians to pursue doctoral degrees and has sent outstanding personnel to hospitals in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom and renowned hospitals in China for further training, making a positive contribution to discipline development.
The department undertakes part of the theoretical and clinical teaching for Qingdao University undergraduate clinical-medicine students, seven-year-program students and South Asian international students, as well as postgraduate training, training more than 30 postgraduates annually. Students are assigned throughout China. Each year it regularly conducts trial lectures for new clinical teachers, collective lesson preparation and review of teaching syllabi; strengthens teachers’ innovative awareness and ability; encourages young teachers to participate in hospital teaching competitions; and has won second prize in English teaching ward rounds and third prize in Mandarin teaching. It actively reforms teaching methods, making development of medical students’ comprehensive abilities—especially clinical reasoning and practical problem-solving—the important direction of teaching reform. It has formulated detailed teaching plans, continuously improved teaching standards and published multiple teaching papers. National and provincial continuing medical-education courses and academic-exchange activities are held every year.
