Emergency Internal Medicine
The Department of Emergency Internal Medicine was formally established in 1995. In 1999, the Emergency Medicine Teaching and Research Section was established, and the department began undertaking emergency medicine teaching for medical students at all levels of Qingdao University Medical College, clinical instruction, and training for emergency medical, nursing, and technical personnel. In 2000, with the approval of the State Council, the Emergency Department became an authorized institution for master's degree programs and began enrolling and training master's students. In 2011, it was further approved as a doctoral degree-granting site and began enrolling and training doctoral students. In 2003, with the approval of the Shandong Provincial Department of Education, it became a key discipline under Shandong Province's "Tenth Five-Year Plan".
Through the unremitting efforts of several generations, the Department of Emergency Internal Medicine has achieved leapfrog development in its scale, medical services, professional programs, academic standards, talent training, and medical equipment, and has made remarkable achievements in medical care, teaching, and research.
2. Talent Structure
The Department of Emergency Internal Medicine has strong human resources and has developed into a medical, teaching, and research team led by the department director and supported by a large number of highly qualified young and middle-aged professionals. At present, the discipline has 56 full-time physicians, including 6 with doctoral degrees and 42 with master's degrees. Personnel with master's degrees or above account for 85.7%. There are 2 physicians with senior professional titles, 12 with associate senior professional titles, and 32 attending physicians. There is 1 doctoral supervisor and 3 master's supervisors. The department has a sound talent structure. Its academic leader is energetic and is a senior professional-title holder recognized in the relevant academic field for high academic attainments and outstanding achievements.
3. Professional Features
(1) Standardized Treatment of Acute Myocardial Infarction
The hospital has established an advanced cardiovascular emergency treatment platform for the Emergency Department, including a dedicated emergency catheterization laboratory and emergency coronary care unit, as well as professional technical expertise (most physicians in the Department of Emergency Internal Medicine are graduates of cardiovascular postgraduate programs) and advanced equipment (advanced DSA equipment and cardiovascular emergency equipment), together with a rational and efficient treatment process (admission → catheterization laboratory → monitoring unit, all within one unit). Through the efforts of the entire cardiovascular emergency team, the average door-to-balloon time for STEMI patients is less than 90 minutes; without delays caused by patient-related factors, it can be achieved within 60 minutes, reaching an internationally advanced level. In 2012, 379 coronary heart disease interventional diagnostic and treatment procedures were performed, with no serious complications. Through emergency intervention and thrombolytic therapy, the infarct-related vessels were opened promptly, saving the lives of many patients with acute myocardial infarction, reducing the disability rate, and producing significant social and technical benefits. In 2011, to promote standardized treatment of myocardial infarction, the Ministry of Health selected 51 hospitals from all tertiary Grade A hospitals nationwide to participate in the "Standardized Treatment Project for Acute Myocardial Infarction." Because of the outstanding contribution made by the Department of Emergency Internal Medicine to the treatment of acute myocardial infarction, our hospital was fortunate to be selected.
In 2012, the hospital equipped the Department of Emergency Internal Medicine with an IABP (intra-aortic balloon pump), further strengthening its ability to treat cardiovascular emergencies and critical illnesses and improving the resuscitation of patients with cardiogenic shock after myocardial infarction.
(2) Severe Acute Pancreatitis
Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) is one of the acute abdominal conditions that seriously threaten life. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, it has high mortality and complication rates, requires expensive treatment, and involves multiple specialties. Although diagnostic and treatment standards have improved greatly in recent years, mortality and complication rates remain higher than the advanced domestic level. On February 18, 2011, a meeting of members of the in-hospital SAP diagnosis and treatment collaboration group, composed of physicians from Hepatobiliary Surgery, Gastroenterology, Emergency Internal Medicine, Emergency General Surgery, and Critical Care Medicine, among others, adopted the hospital's SAP diagnosis and treatment guidelines and an agreement on the division of responsibilities. Emergency Internal Medicine and Emergency General Surgery are responsible for differential diagnosis and initial grading, and for providing rapid, accurate, and timely treatment of severe acute pancreatitis, thereby reducing mortality, the incidence of serious complications, and the high treatment costs associated with severe pancreatitis.
4. Medical Technology
The hospital invested several million yuan to build an emergency catheterization laboratory and equipped it with advanced medical equipment worth several million yuan. By implementing dynamic scientific management and applying the medical service philosophy of "patient-centered care and medical quality as the core," it achieved gains in both quality and efficiency, and outpatient volume increased significantly.
5. Scientific Research and Teaching
In recent years, the department has undertaken more than 10 provincial- and municipal-level scientific research projects; as a collaborating subcenter, it has participated in 6 major international collaborative studies and 5 domestic collaborative studies on acute myocardial infarction; it has received more than 10 provincial- and municipal-level scientific research awards; and it has served as chief editor or deputy chief editor of 10 books. In recent years, it has published more than 100 academic papers in domestic publicly issued academic journals, of which more than 20 were indexed by SCI, MED, and CA. It has developed a number of new technologies and projects, established long-term and stable cooperative relationships with relevant institutions in the United States, Germany, and other countries, and appointed renowned scholars as visiting professors. Several staff members have studied or visited abroad and have played an active role in the development of the discipline.
The department adheres to development and innovation in teaching practice. It was the first department within the university to introduce multimedia teaching and achieved significant results. Taking advantage of its status as a provincial key discipline and doctoral program, it has diligently pursued development and made unremitting efforts to train many master's and doctoral students. It has organized national- and provincial-level continuing medical education courses and academic exchange activities on numerous occasions.
