If you want laser vision correction in China, plan one trip of about a week: a thorough pre-operative exam, the surgery itself (minutes per eye), a next-day check and a final review around day seven before you fly. Prices are substantially lower than typical US rates, and the technology in major eye hospitals is current-generation. The one thing you cannot control from abroad is candidacy — the pre-op exam can and does disqualify people, so build that possibility into your plans.

Why China for refractive surgery

China has one of the world's highest myopia burdens: government monitoring put overall myopia among children and adolescents at 51.9% in 2022[5]. The practical consequence for a visiting patient is volume — large dedicated eye hospitals, both public and private chains, run high-throughput refractive departments with current equipment such as the Zeiss VISUMAX 800, whose robotic "SMILE pro" procedure cuts the per-eye laser scan to about 10 seconds[6]. High volume is not by itself proof of quality, but it does mean experienced surgical teams and standardized pre-op workups are easy to find in major cities. Browse hospitals offering refractive surgery to see which international departments handle it.

The main options at a glance

Method What happens Typically suits Notes
SMILE / SMILE pro (全飞秒) A femtosecond laser cuts a thin lenticule inside the cornea, removed through a ~2 mm incision[6] Mild-to-high myopia with adequate corneal thickness No flap; newer VISUMAX 800 version scans in ~10 s per eye[6]
LASIK / femto-LASIK (半飞秒) A corneal flap is lifted, an excimer laser reshapes the cornea underneath to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism[1] Wide range of prescriptions, incl. hyperopia Most studied method worldwide
Surface ablation (PRK/TransPRK) Laser reshapes the surface without a flap Thinner corneas, some professions Slower, sorer recovery
ICL (phakic lens implant) A soft lens is implanted between iris and natural lens; no corneal tissue removed, and the lens can be removed later[7] High myopia (roughly −3 to −18 D), thin corneas[7] The most expensive option[7]

A note on ICL models: the market in China has long been dominated by STAAR's EVO ICL; a domestically developed phakic lens (Longjing PR) was approved in January 2025, and the newer EVO+ ICL is available in mainland China only as a licensed special-access procedure in the Boao Lecheng pilot zone (and in Hong Kong), at roughly double the usual ICL price[7]. If a clinic pitches you a specific lens model, ask why it fits your eye measurements — see our Boao Lecheng guide for how special-access access works.

Candidacy: the exam can say no

Every serious refractive center starts with an extensive pre-operative workup — the Wuhan price list cited below includes more than 20 separate tests in the package[6]. Expect corneal topography/tomography, corneal thickness measurement, dilated fundus examination, dry-eye assessment, pupil measurement and repeated refractions. This exam exists to screen you out as much as in. Common disqualifiers for laser surgery include:

  • Thin or irregular corneas (including early keratoconus) — the laser must leave enough untouched tissue behind.
  • Unstable prescription — surgeons want your refraction stable for at least a year.
  • Age under 18, because the eye is still changing.
  • Significant dry eye, uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Two practical consequences for travelers:

  1. Get screened at home first. Any optometrist can measure corneal thickness and topography. It is far cheaper to learn you are a borderline candidate before buying flights. Bring the reports with you.
  2. Stop contact lenses before the exam. Soft lenses typically need to be out for several days, rigid lenses for weeks, because they temporarily reshape the cornea. If you wear contacts on the flight over and get examined the next morning, your measurements may be invalid — ask your chosen hospital for its exact rule before you travel.

If laser surgery is ruled out, ICL is often still possible, since it removes no corneal tissue[7] — but it is an intraocular procedure with its own exam criteria (anterior chamber depth, endothelial cell count). No surgeon can promise you a method before seeing scans; be suspicious of anyone who does.

Process and how many days to plan

A realistic single-trip schedule looks like this (example):

  • Day 1–2 — pre-op exam. Half a day. Your pupils will be dilated, so you cannot drive and reading is hard for some hours. Surgery is normally not done the same day as a dilated exam.
  • Day 3 — surgery. The laser itself takes seconds to minutes per eye; you are in the hospital a few hours. You leave with eye shields, drops and instructions. Someone should accompany you back to the hotel.
  • Day 4 — first review. Surgeons want to see you the day after surgery[4]. Vision is often already functional after SMILE/LASIK.
  • Day 7–10 — second review, then fly. Most visiting patients depart after this check.

That makes 5–10 days a sensible planning window for SMILE or LASIK. Surface ablation (PRK) heals more slowly and may need a longer stay. See combining treatment with travel for how to pace sightseeing around it — early post-op days favor low-dust, low-exertion activities.

After surgery: what you can and cannot do

  • Flying: cabin pressure does not affect a LASIK/SMILE eye — flying or diving "will have no effect on vision or the LASIK surgery" per an AAO-affiliated surgeon[3] — but schedule flights around your day-1 and week-1 reviews[4]. Cabin air is extremely dry: use artificial tears every hour or two on board and wear UV-blocking sunglasses[4].
  • Water: no swimming or exposing the eye to water for a minimum of 2 weeks[2]. Hot tubs, lakes and the sea carry higher infection risk than pools — err later, not earlier.
  • Sport: no strenuous exercise or contact sports for up to 1 month[2].
  • Screens: screen work is allowed early, but blink rates drop when you stare — expect dryness and take frequent breaks with lubricating drops in the first weeks.
  • General: avoid rubbing your eyes, eye makeup and dusty or smoky environments in the early healing period; follow your surgeon's drop schedule exactly.

Follow-up at home

Typical review points after the first week are around 1 month, 3 months and 6–12 months. These are short visits — refraction, vision check, corneal imaging — that any competent eye clinic in your home country can perform. Before leaving China:

  • Ask for a complete English (or bilingual) surgical report: method, laser platform, ablation parameters or lens model/size, and copies of your pre-op topography. Future eye doctors — including a cataract surgeon decades from now — will need these numbers.
  • Agree on how to reach the surgical team remotely if something feels wrong, and get the red-flag list in writing (worsening pain, sudden vision drop, increasing redness).
  • Know the enhancement policy: a small share of patients need a touch-up, and a free enhancement promise is worth little once you live 8,000 km away. Price a local touch-up into your worst case.

Our medical records guide covers how to get usable records, and the risks guide covers complication planning honestly: rare problems (infection, flap issues, ectasia, persistent halos or dry eye) may need weeks of local care — a traveler's schedule is the main extra risk you take compared with a local patient.

Who should not travel for this: anyone whose home exam already shows borderline corneas or significant dry eye; anyone who cannot stay at least a week; anyone unwilling to budget for follow-up care at home.

What it costs

Refractive surgery in China is elective, out-of-pocket, and priced per package. As of October 2026, one published example — Wuhan Puri Eye Hospital's Qiaokou campus — lists the SMILE family at ¥12,800–13,800 (SMILE 3.0), ¥18,800 (precision 4.0), ¥25,800 (SMILE pro on VISUMAX 800) and ¥28,800 (SMILE pro with enhanced astigmatism module) for both eyes, with the pre-op exam and follow-up reviews included[6]. Industry reporting puts the complete EVO ICL procedure at roughly ¥28,000 for standard and ¥34,000 for toric lenses, making it the most expensive mainstream option[7]; the special-access EVO+ ICL in Hong Kong or Boao Lecheng runs around ¥60,000–80,000[7].

For comparison, the 2026 US average for LASIK is about $2,246 per eye — roughly $4,500 (≈¥32,000) for both eyes — and advertised low prices often exclude fees[8]. The savings are real, but so are the caveats: quotes differ between cities and between public hospitals and private chains, promotional prices may exclude key exams, and you must add flights and a week of accommodation. Always ask for a written all-inclusive quote; our cost comparison guide shows how to normalize quotes, and the insurance guide explains why elective vision correction is almost never reimbursable.

Two price tiers: ordinary vs international/private. The example prices above come from a private eye hospital, not from a public hospital's ordinary clinic. In a public hospital's ordinary departments (普通门诊), basic services are billed at government-guided item prices that apply to every patient, foreigners included; 特需 (VIP) and international-department services are priced by the hospital at market rates and capped at a share of its services[9]. Public hospitals sell bulk-procured (集采) drugs and devices at their purchase price, with no markup[10]. As an illustration, China-Japan Friendship Hospital's published schedule lists a chief-physician consultation in its international department at ¥500, against ¥50 for an ordinary attending-physician appointment[11]. You do not have to use the international department: with a passport you can register at the ordinary clinic and pay yourself (mainland insurance does not apply) — see your first hospital visit without a Chinese ID. The international department or a private hospital costs more but usually adds English-speaking staff, appointments and, often, direct billing with commercial insurers. Whichever route you choose, ask for a written quote.

الأسئلة الشائعة

How long do I need to stay in China for SMILE or LASIK?

Plan 5–10 days: a half-day pre-operative exam, the surgery itself, a next-day check and ideally a check around one week before you fly home. ICL follows a similar schedule but some clinics add an extra preparation step.

Can the pre-op exam disqualify me?

Yes, and this is the single biggest planning risk. Thin or irregular corneas, unstable prescriptions, severe dry eye, some medical conditions and pregnancy can all rule out laser surgery. Have an exam at home first, or build a backup plan into your trip.

Can I fly home right after surgery?

Flying itself does not harm a healed LASIK or SMILE eye, but surgeons want to see you the day after surgery, and cabin air is very dry — use artificial tears frequently on board. Most travelers stay for the one-week check before departing.

How much does it cost compared with the US?

One Wuhan hospital's published 2026 price ladder runs ¥12,800–28,800 for both eyes depending on equipment generation, and industry reporting puts EVO ICL around ¥28,000–34,000. The 2026 US average for LASIK is about $2,246 per eye, so roughly $4,500 for both eyes.

What if laser surgery isn't suitable for me?

High prescriptions or thin corneas often point to ICL — a removable lens implanted inside the eye that doesn't cut corneal tissue. The pre-op exam decides; no reputable surgeon will promise a method before seeing your scans.

Is refractive surgery covered by insurance?

It is elective surgery. Chinese public insurance does not apply to international visitors, and vision correction is typically excluded from travel and private policies too, so budget for the full out-of-pocket price.
