簡要回答
No rankings, just who is where: public stomatology hospitals, their international and VIP clinics, and private dental providers, city by city, with how to check a clinic before you book.
- Where can I find an English-speaking dentist in Shanghai?: Options include the international services of Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital (+86 21 5331 4069) and Tongji University's stomatology hospital (+86 21 6652 8783), both listed with English service in the Shanghai government directory, plus private providers such as Shanghai United Family's dental clinic.
- Is there an international dental clinic in Beijing?: Yes. Peking University Hospital of Stomatology runs an international clinic next to its main campus that states it offers full English-language treatment, commercial insurance direct billing and weekend hours; bookings on +86 10 8301 3555.
- Which is the best dentist in Beijing or Shanghai?: We do not rank dentists, and no official ranking of individual dentists exists.
- How do I check that a Chinese dental clinic is licensed?: The National Health Commission offers public look-ups of a medical institution's practice registration and of a physician's practice registration on the national government service platform (in Chinese).

There is no official "best dentist" list in China, and we do not rank them. What exists is a clear set of options. First, the large public stomatology (dental) hospitals attached to universities. Some of them now run international or VIP clinics. Second, the dental departments of hospitals with international desks. Third, private hospitals and dental chains used by expatriates. Pick the type of clinic first: a public hospital for complex cases and regulated prices, an international, VIP or private clinic for English and appointments. Then check the licence and get an itemised written quote. The city sections below list what each institution in our directory has published officially. Where something is not stated, we say so.
This guide covers where to go and whom to ask. For whether a dental trip makes sense, what it costs and how many visits it takes, read dental tourism in China.
How to judge a dental clinic (instead of a ranking)
- Match the clinic to the case. Implants with bone grafting, full-arch work, jaw surgery and failed earlier treatment belong in a large stomatology hospital or its international clinic. Check-ups, fillings, simple root canals and single crowns can be done well at most qualified providers. The National Health Commission set up its National Center for Stomatology around three hospitals: Peking University Hospital of Stomatology, West China Hospital of Stomatology and Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital[1]. This is a planning designation, not a ranking.
- Check the licence. The National Health Commission offers two public look-ups on the national government service platform, both in Chinese. One checks a medical institution's practice registration[2], the other a physician's practice registration[3]. Choose the province and enter the details requested.
- Get an itemised written quote. It should list the service fee, every material by brand, imaging, temporary teeth and follow-up visits. For implants, ask whether the clinic has committed to the national implant price rules. The National Healthcare Security Administration publishes the list of public and private institutions that have, searchable through its official WeChat account[5].
- Ask which materials are used. Get the implant brand and system, and the crown material. Devices sold in China carry a registration number that you can look up in the National Medical Products Administration database[4].
- Get warranty terms in writing. We found no national standard warranty for implants or crowns. Each provider sets its own terms. Ask what is covered, for how long, and whether it still applies if a dentist abroad does your check-ups.
- Plan which records to take home. Hospitals must accept a patient's request to copy records, including imaging, and outpatient records are in principle kept by the patient[6]. Ask for X-rays or CBCT files, notes and the implant brand, model and lot number before you leave.
- Ask about language. Does the dentist speak English, or does a coordinator interpret? Is interpretation charged? See language and interpreters.

Before you call: what to have ready
- Your passport name and date of birth, and your travel dates.
- A one-paragraph summary of the problem or the treatment you want, plus recent X-rays or CBCT files.
- Your questions. Who will treat me? Which tier is the price (ordinary, VIP or international)? How many visits? Can I have an itemised quote?
Public hospitals often book through WeChat or apps that ask for a Chinese ID number. For a first visit, register in person with your passport, as explained in your first hospital visit without a Chinese ID. The inquiry letter tool writes your request in English and Chinese.
Next steps
- Filter dental providers by city, for example Beijing or Shanghai. You can also compare two side by side, for example Shanghai Ninth and Tongji Stomatology.
- Check costs and trip counts in dental tourism in China, and treatment details for implants or dentures and full-mouth implants.
- Use the planner to fit appointments, travel and recovery around the replies you get.
