A dental check-up with professional cleaning is the easiest piece of medical care to add to any China trip: one visit of one to two hours, no downtime, and item-by-item prices in public hospitals that are set under government guide rates rather than free-floating. It is also the smartest first step if you are considering bigger dental work in China — implants, crowns or orthodontics — because one cheap visit shows you how a provider examines, explains and bills before you commit to anything.

What a check-up and cleaning includes

A standard visit covers:

  • Examination — the dentist checks every tooth, existing fillings and crowns, gums, bite, and the soft tissues of the mouth; X-rays only if a problem is suspected.
  • Ultrasonic scaling — an ultrasonic tip vibrates tartar (calculus) off the teeth above and just below the gumline; this is what "teeth cleaning / 洁牙" usually means in China.
  • Polishing — removes surface stains (tea, coffee, tobacco) and smooths the enamel; some clinics offer air-polishing ("sandblasting" / 喷砂) for heavier staining as an add-on.
  • Advice and a findings list — cavities to watch, gum pockets, worn fillings, and a written or app-based report in most large providers.

What it is not: a cleaning does not treat established gum disease. If the dentist finds deep pockets and tartar below the gums, the fix is periodontal scaling and root planing ("deep cleaning" / 龈下刮治) — a separate course, usually billed per quadrant or per tooth and spread over extra visits. Don't let anyone upsell you from a routine clean into a same-day full-mouth deep cleaning without seeing the pocket measurements and understanding the plan.

Why have it done in China

  • Cost and speed. In public hospitals, oral services are billed item by item at prices capped by provincial or municipal guide rates — Beijing, for example, published maximum guide prices for 114 standardized oral service items effective mid-2026, which public hospitals may undercut but not exceed[2]. Compare that structure with Australia, where there are no standard dental fees at all and each clinic sets its own[5] — a periodic check-up with scale, clean and fluoride averages about A$219 (range A$162–309)[4] — or England, where the NHS Band 1 course (examination, diagnosis, scale and polish if clinically needed) costs £27.90 but NHS appointments can be hard to get, and private hygienist visits cost more[3].
  • Standardized billing categories. China's national pricing guideline for oral services, published in February 2025, consolidates oral price items into six standard categories so that hospitals bill by service outcome instead of stacking per-step fees[1].
  • Availability. Big-city stomatology hospitals and dental chains offer same-week — often same-day — slots, evenings and weekends included at private chains.
  • A dry run for bigger treatment. The exam produces exactly the findings (cavities, gum status, missing-tooth options) that a quote for implants or crowns and veneers builds on.

Limits to keep in mind: routine clinics work in Chinese, so booking and consent forms may need translation help (see language and interpreters); your dental insurance network from home almost certainly doesn't apply, so you pay directly and claim later; and continuity matters in dentistry — a one-off cleaning abroad doesn't replace a regular dentist who tracks your mouth over the years.

Public stomatology hospitals vs private chains

Public stomatology hospitals (口腔医院) and the stomatology departments of general hospitals examine and clean at government-guided item prices. Booking runs through Chinese-language apps or WeChat accounts, queues are real, and English at the front desk is not guaranteed — though their international or VIP clinics take bookings by email or phone, provide interpretation and charge noticeably more for the same clinical work; see international departments explained.

Private dental chains in major cities are built for convenience: online booking, English-speaking staff at many branches, transparent package menus for exam-plus-cleaning, and longer appointment slots. Prices are set freely — sometimes below public-hospital international-department rates, sometimes well above. Both routes are legitimate; for a simple cleaning, choose on convenience, language and published price, and keep the receipts either way (see payments in China).

Process, visits and days

  1. Book a few days ahead (international departments and chains) or via app/WeChat for regular public clinics. State clearly that you want 检查 (exam) and 洁牙 (cleaning).
  2. The visit takes 1–2 hours including registration and payment. Bring your passport — hospitals register patients against ID.
  3. Afterwards there is no downtime. Mild gum soreness or temperature sensitivity for a day or two is normal; avoid strongly coloured food and drink for 24 hours if you had polishing.
  4. If findings need treatment — a filling, deep cleaning or more — you can often start the same week, or take the written findings home to decide. A single root canal or deep-cleaning course adds visits, so check your itinerary first.

Schedule the cleaning early in your trip: if the dentist finds something worth treating, you still have days to act on it. It pairs well with a broader executive health check-up for a "maintenance trip".

What it costs

No national fixed price exists for a check-up and cleaning in China. The structure:

  • Public hospitals charge item by item — registration/consultation, scaling, polishing, add-ons — at rates capped by each province's or city's guide prices for public institutions[2]. The national guideline consolidates these items into standard categories billed by outcome[1]. Totals are generally modest by Western standards, but vary by city and hospital tier, so confirm when booking.
  • International/VIP departments price the same clinical work with a service premium — booking in English, interpretation, one-on-one time.
  • Private chains publish package prices for exam-plus-cleaning; promotions are common. Check what the package includes (polishing? air-polishing? fluoride?) before comparing.

For context abroad: NHS England's Band 1 course is £27.90 (from April 2026) covering examination, diagnosis and scale-and-polish where clinically needed[3]; a comparable Australian private check-up with clean and fluoride averages about A$219[4], with no standard national fees[5]. If you are already in China, a cleaning at local prices is usually an easy win; flying to China only for a cleaning makes no financial sense — it earns its place as an add-on to a trip, which is the honest arithmetic laid out in costs and price comparison.

Two price tiers: ordinary vs international/private. The prices above are ordinary-tier (non-VIP) public-hospital prices. In a public hospital's ordinary departments (普通门诊), basic services are billed at government-guided item prices that apply to every patient, foreigners included; 特需 (VIP) and international-department services are priced by the hospital at market rates and capped at a share of its services[6]. Public hospitals sell bulk-procured (集采) drugs and devices at their purchase price, with no markup[7]. As an illustration, China-Japan Friendship Hospital's published schedule lists a chief-physician consultation in its international department at ¥500, against ¥50 for an ordinary attending-physician appointment[8]. You do not have to use the international department: with a passport you can register at the ordinary clinic and pay yourself (mainland insurance does not apply) — see your first hospital visit without a Chinese ID. The international department or a private hospital costs more but usually adds English-speaking staff, appointments and, often, direct billing with commercial insurers. Whichever route you choose, ask for a written quote.

Travel fit and recovery

This is the definition of a short_trip treatment: zero recovery days, no activity limits, safe any day of your itinerary including the day before a flight. The only planning notes: carve out a half-day in case of queues, and bring your hotel address in Chinese for the registration form. Any city in our cities directory with a listed stomatology hospital or chain branch works.

Choosing a provider — and what to ask

Filter the directory by city and language: hospitals for check-up and cleaning. For a routine cleaning the stakes are low, but five questions still pay off (the bilingual inquiry letter tool can send them in English and Chinese):

  1. What does the exam-plus-cleaning price include — scaling, polishing, air-polishing, fluoride?
  2. Can I book a specific time in English, and is an interpreter available?
  3. Will I get my findings (and any X-rays) as digital copies in English?
  4. If you find cavities or gum pockets, what happens next and what would it cost?
  5. Do you provide an itemized receipt (fapiao) I can submit to my insurer?

Risks, limits and follow-up at home

Professional cleaning is among the lowest-risk dental procedures: transient gum soreness, brief sensitivity, and rare gum irritation are the typical worst cases. The real risks are decisional, not procedural:

  • Underestimating findings. If the dentist diagnoses periodontal disease, a cleaning is not the treatment — plan a proper course, in China or at home, and read risks and complications before deciding where.
  • Overtreatment pressure. Decline same-day upsells you don't understand; ask for the findings in writing and take a day to think. A legitimate provider will put measurements and prices on paper.
  • Lost continuity. Give your dentist at home the findings report so your long-term record stays complete — see medical records and follow-up.

People with pacemakers, heart valve conditions, bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medication should mention it before scaling — the dentist may adapt the method or ask for a doctor's note first. If you have implants, say so: implant surfaces are cleaned with special instruments.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

How long does a dental check-up and cleaning take in China?

Plan one visit of 1–2 hours: examination, ultrasonic scaling, polishing and advice. If the dentist finds deep tartar under the gums, periodontal deep cleaning is a separate treatment that may need 1–2 extra visits.

How much does teeth cleaning cost in China?

There is no national fixed price. Public hospitals charge item-by-item at government-guided rates set by each province or city, which are generally modest; private chains publish their own packages, and international/VIP departments charge more. Confirm the price when booking.

Do I need an appointment, and can I book in English?

Public stomatology hospitals book mainly through Chinese-language apps or WeChat; their international or VIP clinics usually take email or phone bookings in English. Private chains in big cities often have English-speaking front desks and same-week slots.

Is ultrasonic scaling safe for my teeth?

Professional scaling removes tartar without damaging enamel; mild gum soreness and temperature sensitivity for a day or two are normal. Tell the dentist about implants, pacemakers or heart conditions beforehand so they adapt the method.

Will they take X-rays?

Only if the examination suggests a problem — a routine cleaning does not require X-rays. If images are taken, ask for digital copies so your dentist at home can use them.

Can a cleaning visit help me plan bigger dental work in China?

Yes — a check-up is a low-cost way to experience a hospital's workflow, language support and billing before committing to implants, crowns or orthodontics, and the exam results feed straight into a treatment plan.
