Urology (泌尿外科) is one of the busiest surgical specialties in Chinese hospitals, and its leading departments are old, large and nationally designated: Peking University First Hospital's urology department and the Peking University Institute of Urology trace their origins to 1946 and 1978 and host national centres for urological and male genital cancers[1]. International patients can use ordinary urology clinics at the same government-guided prices as local patients, or a VIP/international tier for language support and time at market rates[4]. The key planning issues are diagnosis before you travel, a realistic recovery window, and what happens to stents, catheters and pathology results after you fly home.

What urology covers in Chinese hospitals

The 泌尿外科 department treats the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and male genital organs surgically and endoscopically. Peking University First Hospital, for example, lists six main directions: urological and male genital tumours, prostate disease, urinary continence, male reproductive disorders, urinary stones and kidney transplantation[1]. Typical reasons for a visit:

  • Stones — kidney and ureteric stones treated by shock-wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy or percutaneous surgery.
  • Prostate — benign enlargement (BPH) needing endoscopic surgery; raised PSA needing MRI and biopsy.
  • Tumours — prostate, kidney, bladder and upper-tract cancers, often with laparoscopic or robot-assisted surgery.
  • Continence and pelvic floor — urinary incontinence in men and women.
  • Andrology (男科) — erectile dysfunction and male infertility, sometimes in a separate clinic; see our fertility specialty page for couples.

Neighbouring departments matter: 肾内科 (nephrology) manages kidney disease without surgery and dialysis, and oncology departments deliver chemotherapy or radiotherapy after urological cancer surgery.

National designations

China marks clinical strength through national programmes rather than rankings. Urology was one of nine specialties in the Ministry of Health's 2012 round of national key clinical specialty (国家临床重点专科) projects, open to tertiary hospitals with strong teams and quality records[3]. Peking Union Medical College Hospital's urology was among its seven departments added in that round[2]. Peking University First Hospital's department has been a national key discipline since 1989, was named a key clinical specialty in 2012, and hosts the national research centre (2007) and the Ministry of Health medical centre (2009) for urological and male genital tumours[1].

These designations reflect case volume, teaching and research — not a guarantee about any individual surgeon.

Which cities are strong

  • Beijing — Peking University First Hospital's urology and Institute of Urology[1], PUMCH's urology[2] and other large teaching hospitals.
  • Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Chengdu and other provincial capitals have high-volume urology departments in tertiary (三甲) hospitals.

Browse hospitals with urology services to compare by city and language support.

The two routes: ordinary clinics vs VIP/international departments

All Chinese public hospitals run two price tiers. Basic medical services are billed at government-guided prices for every patient regardless of nationality; VIP (特需) and international services are priced by the hospital at market rates and capped at 10% of total service volume[4]. As an illustration, China-Japan Friendship Hospital lists ¥500 for a chief-physician consultation in its international department against ¥50 for an ordinary attending-physician appointment[5]. Public hospitals sell nationally bulk-procured (集采) drugs and devices at purchase price without markup[7] — relevant for urology, where consumables such as stents and catheters are common.

The ordinary route is inexpensive and often fast for diagnostics — ultrasound, CT urography and urine tests are frequently done the same or next day — but first-time registration happens in person with a passport, expert appointments book out, consultations are short and everything runs in Chinese. Read your first hospital visit without a Chinese ID and plan for an interpreter.

The VIP/international route buys named-specialist appointments, longer consultations, private rooms and foreign-language support at several times the ordinary price. See international departments explained and check whether your insurance covers treatment abroad.

Payment: larger hospitals must accept foreign bank cards, mobile payment and cash[6]; most visitors use Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to a home card. Surgery and admission require a deposit.

Records to bring

  1. Imaging in original DICOM format — CT urography, MRI of the prostate, ultrasound images — not only printed reports.
  2. Laboratory results with units and reference ranges: PSA history with dates, kidney function, urine tests and cultures.
  3. Pathology reports or slides from any biopsy or previous surgery.
  4. Operative notes and stent records — type and date of any stent or catheter in place.
  5. Medication and allergy list with generic names, especially anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs, which affect surgical timing.
  6. Stone analysis results if you have passed or had stones removed before.

Translate key documents — see getting your medical records translated — and use the bilingual inquiry letter tool to confirm that the department treats your condition and what it needs from you.

Recovery, stents and follow-up

Many urology operations leave something behind that needs attention later: a ureteric stent after stone surgery that must be removed or changed within a set time, a urinary catheter after prostate surgery, or pathology that arrives a week or more after a cancer operation. Before surgery, agree in writing how long you will stay, when the stent or catheter comes out and where, and how you will receive the final pathology report. Long flights soon after pelvic or abdominal surgery raise blood-clot risk; ask the surgeon for an earliest-flying date. Cancer treatment may continue with radiotherapy, hormone therapy or surveillance — arrange the home team who will take over.

Risks and who should not travel

  • Do not travel with an emergency. Fever with a blocked kidney, acute urinary retention, heavy bleeding or severe pain need care where you are; if it happens in China, read emergency care in China.
  • Forgotten stents are dangerous. Never leave without a clear removal plan.
  • Complex cancers need continuity. A second-opinion trip is realistic; full treatment abroad is a bigger commitment.
  • Leave with complete records — diagnosis certificate (诊断证明), operative and pathology reports, itemized invoices — see medical records and follow-up, and check visa and entry rules.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

What is urology called in Chinese hospitals?

泌尿外科 (urological surgery). Men's sexual and reproductive health is often handled in a separate 男科 (andrology) clinic, kidney disease without surgery in 肾内科 (nephrology), and kidney transplantation in a transplant centre.

Can I see a urologist in China without a referral?

Yes. You register directly with the department using your passport at a staffed counter on the first visit. Expert appointments at well-known hospitals book out quickly, so register as early as possible.

Which urology problems are realistic to travel for?

Planned, well-defined problems: kidney or ureteric stones, an enlarged prostate needing surgery, a second opinion on a prostate, kidney or bladder tumour, or a diagnostic work-up such as cystoscopy or prostate biopsy. Acute obstruction with fever or infection needs treatment where you are.

How long should I stay after urology surgery?

It depends on the operation. Endoscopic stone and prostate procedures usually mean a short hospital stay, but you may leave with a catheter or a ureteric stent that must be removed later; larger cancer operations need longer. Ask for the expected stay, stent or catheter plan and earliest flying date in writing.

Do I need an interpreter for a urology visit?

In ordinary clinics, usually yes: consultations, consent forms and discharge instructions are in Chinese. International or VIP departments offer foreign-language service at market prices; otherwise bring a bilingual companion or a paid interpreter, especially for surgical consent.
