China's ear, nose and throat (ENT) care is anchored by a small number of dedicated eye-and-ENT institutions — above all the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai, which handled more than 3.44 million outpatient visits and 205,000 operations in 2025, and Beijing Tongren Hospital, whose otolaryngology is a national key discipline[1][2]. International patients can register directly with ENT departments using a passport and pay the same government-guided prices as local patients, or choose a VIP/international tier for language support at market rates[5]. The real planning questions are surgical: how long you must stay before flying, and who will look after you once home.

What ENT covers in Chinese hospitals

The department is 耳鼻咽喉科, in larger hospitals 耳鼻咽喉头颈外科 (otolaryngology–head and neck surgery). Big departments run sub-specialty clinics:

  • Otology (耳科) — chronic ear infections, perforated eardrums, cholesteatoma, otosclerosis, sudden hearing loss, vertigo, cochlear implants.
  • Rhinology (鼻科) — chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, deviated septum, allergic rhinitis, endoscopic skull-base surgery.
  • Laryngology (咽喉科) — voice disorders, vocal-cord nodules and polyps, swallowing problems.
  • Head and neck surgery (头颈外科) — thyroid, salivary-gland and laryngeal tumours (some hospitals place thyroid surgery under general surgery instead).
  • Sleep medicine — snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea, often with a sleep laboratory.
  • Audiology (听力中心) — hearing tests, hearing-aid fitting and cochlear-implant programming.

Typical reasons international patients consider ENT care in China include sinus and nasal surgery, ear surgery for chronic infection or conductive hearing loss, evaluation of vertigo or sudden hearing loss, voice problems, and a second opinion on a head-and-neck tumour. Hearing loss is a large field: the WHO estimates that more than 5% of the world's population — 430 million people — need rehabilitation for disabling hearing loss[3]. For hearing-aid specifics, see our hearing aids page.

How China marks its strongest ENT centres

China signals capability through national programmes rather than rankings. The National Health Commission funds national key clinical specialty (国家临床重点专科) projects in named departments under its clinical specialty capacity plan[4]. At the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University, both ophthalmology and otolaryngology are national key disciplines and NHC clinical key specialties; the hospital hosts the NHC Key Laboratory of Hearing Medicine and serves as the national medical quality-control centre for otolaryngology[1]. Beijing Tongren Hospital, founded in 1886, describes itself as a large tertiary general hospital whose ophthalmology and otolaryngology are national key disciplines[2].

These designations reflect case volume, research and teaching roles — not a guarantee that a given surgeon suits your case.

Which cities are strong

  • Shanghai — the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University, China's first dedicated eye-ENT hospital (founded 1952), with 753 open beds across several campuses and an international medical centre among its departments[1].
  • Beijing — Beijing Tongren Hospital's otolaryngology–head and neck surgery, plus strong ENT departments in other major teaching hospitals[2].
  • Provincial capitals such as Guangzhou, Chengdu and Wuhan have large ENT departments in tertiary (三甲) hospitals.

The two routes: ordinary clinics vs VIP/international departments

Every Chinese public hospital runs two price tiers. Basic medical services are charged at government-guided prices for every patient, regardless of nationality; VIP (特需) and international services are priced by the hospital at market rates and capped at 10% of total service volume[5]. As an illustration, China-Japan Friendship Hospital lists ¥500 for a chief-physician consultation in its international department against ¥50 for an ordinary attending-physician appointment[6].

The ordinary route is inexpensive and often fast for tests — hearing tests, nasal endoscopy and CT can frequently be done on the day — but you register in person with your passport on the first visit, sought-after specialists book out early, and everything runs in Chinese. Read your first hospital visit without a Chinese ID and consider an interpreter.

The VIP/international route buys named-specialist appointments, longer consultations, foreign-language service and (sometimes) direct insurance billing at several times the ordinary price. See international departments explained and check whether your insurance covers care abroad.

Payment: national policy requires larger hospitals to accept foreign bank cards, mobile payment and cash[7]; in practice most visitors pay with Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to a home card. Surgery and admission require a deposit.

Records and tests to bring

  1. Imaging in original DICOM format — sinus or temporal-bone CT, MRI of the internal auditory canals — not only printed reports.
  2. Audiograms and tympanometry with dates, plus any speech-audiometry or balance-test results.
  3. Endoscopy or laryngoscopy reports, with images or video if available.
  4. Pathology reports (or slides) for any biopsy, and operative notes from previous ear, nose or throat surgery.
  5. Medication and allergy list with generic names, including nasal sprays and anticoagulants.
  6. Sleep-study results if you are being assessed for sleep apnoea.

Expect some tests to be repeated locally. Translate key documents — see getting your medical records translated — and use the bilingual inquiry letter tool to ask whether the hospital treats your condition and what it needs.

Surgery, flying and follow-up

Cabin pressure changes affect air-filled spaces — the middle ear and sinuses — which is why ENT surgery has particular flight implications. Ask the surgeon for a written earliest-flying date for your specific operation, build in buffer days, and plan for a post-operative check (packing or splint removal, ear inspection) before you leave. Ear surgery for hearing often needs a hearing test weeks or months later; arrange where that will happen.

Risks and who should not travel

  • Do not travel for urgent problems. Sudden hearing loss, deep neck infection, airway compromise or significant bleeding need treatment where you are — read emergency care in China if it happens during a trip.
  • Implants need local follow-up. Cochlear implants and some hearing devices require months of programming and rehabilitation; plan this before surgery.
  • Cancer care is multi-step. A head-and-neck tumour usually needs surgery, radiotherapy and long follow-up; a second-opinion trip is realistic, full treatment abroad is a bigger decision.
  • Complications can appear after you fly home. Leave with a diagnosis certificate (诊断证明), operative notes, itemized invoices and medication instructions — see medical records and follow-up — and check visa and entry rules for longer stays.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

What is the ENT department called in a Chinese hospital?

耳鼻咽喉科 (ear, nose and throat), often extended to 耳鼻咽喉头颈外科 (otolaryngology–head and neck surgery). Large departments split into otology, rhinology, laryngology, head-and-neck and sleep clinics, and hearing tests are done by an audiology unit (听力中心).

Can I see an ENT specialist in China without a referral?

Yes. Chinese hospitals do not require a GP referral; you register directly with the department using your passport. Specialist and senior-doctor appointments at well-known hospitals fill quickly, so book as early as the hospital allows.

Is it safe to fly after ear or sinus surgery?

It depends on the operation. Air-pressure changes in the cabin affect the middle ear and sinuses, so surgeons set individual no-fly periods after ear and sinus procedures. Ask your surgeon for a written date before booking your return flight and leave buffer days.

Can I buy hearing aids or get a cochlear implant in China?

Hearing aids are fitted by audiologists in hospital hearing centres and private shops; see our hearing-aids page for warranty and follow-up issues. Cochlear implantation is surgery with months of programming and rehabilitation afterwards, so it only makes sense if the follow-up can be arranged near your home.

Will the ENT doctor speak English?

Not reliably in ordinary clinics. International or VIP departments commit to foreign-language service at market prices; otherwise bring a bilingual companion or a paid interpreter.
