Haikou, Hainan's capital on the island's north coast, is the practical choice for medical travelers to the island: it has Hainan's largest concentration of public hospitals, the island's main international airport (Meilan, HAK), and the shortest rail link to the Boao Lecheng pilot zone. It is less of a resort than Sanya — think a working provincial capital with beaches attached — which is exactly what makes it useful when the priority is appointments, not sunbeds. Entry is simple for many nationalities: Hainan's 30-day visa-free policy covers 61 countries and explicitly permits visits for medical treatment[1].

Why medical travelers use Haikou

  • The island's medical center of gravity. As the provincial capital, Haikou hosts Hainan's major provincial-level hospitals and medical-university affiliated institutions, with more specialist departments than anywhere else on the island.
  • The gateway. Meilan International Airport is Hainan's main hub, a listed port for both the Hainan 30-day visa-free policy and China's 240-hour visa-free transit[1], with long-haul links emerging — a direct Haikou–London route began in May 2025[2].
  • The Boao Lecheng connection. The high-speed rail station under Meilan airport puts you around 35 minutes from the Boao area[5]; the pilot zone itself is about 3.7 km from Boao station[4]. If your goal is a licensed drug or device at Lecheng, flying into HAK and taking the train is usually the smoothest route — see the Boao Lecheng guide.

Medical options in Haikou

For international patients, realistic uses of Haikou's medical system are:

  • Consultations, imaging and check-ups at large public hospitals — the island's broadest sub-specialty coverage, though international desks and English-language service are less developed than in Beijing or Shanghai. Email ahead and confirm language support; our bilingual inquiry tool helps.
  • Dental, eye and TCM care at hospital departments and private clinics — see dental check-ups, eyeglasses and optometry and TCM therapies.
  • Backup for Boao Lecheng patients. Patients treated in the pilot zone sometimes stay in or pass through Haikou; it is worth knowing which Haikou hospital you would use if you needed broader emergency or inpatient care during a Hainan stay.

Browse sourced listings at hospitals in Haikou. For complex elective surgery or oncology with established international departments, mainland centers in Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou remain the standard choices — see choosing a hospital.

Beaches, recovery and what to clear with your doctor

Haikou has genuine beaches — Holiday Beach west of downtown is the best known — plus flat waterfront parks (Wanlü Garden) and the walkable Qilou old town, which suit low-exertion recovery days well. The same medical cautions apply as anywhere tropical:

  • No swimming until cleared. Sea and pool water risk infecting healing incisions, extraction sites and treated skin. Ask your doctor for a specific date rather than assuming a beach day is harmless.
  • Sun care after skin procedures. Laser treatments, peels and fresh scars can pigment badly in tropical sun; ask how long to stay covered, and default to high-SPF, hats and shade.
  • Heat and swelling. Midday heat can aggravate post-procedure swelling; plan outdoor time for mornings and evenings, and rest in air-conditioning.
  • Flying and diving restrictions. Confirm when you may fly home, and ask specifically before any snorkeling or diving excursion elsewhere on the island.

Getting there and entry

By air. Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK) is about 20 km east of downtown, connected by metro-style suburban rail, high-speed rail (the station sits under the terminal area), taxis and ride-hailing. It serves dense domestic networks plus growing international routes, including the direct London link launched in 2025[2].

Visa-free entry. As of October 2026: 61 countries' ordinary passport holders may enter Hainan visa-free for up to 30 days — purposes include tourism, business and medical treatment, with employment and long-term study excluded — and must stay within Hainan under this policy[1]. Nationals of the 79 countries covered by China's nationwide mutual or unilateral visa exemptions can enter under those instead and continue to the mainland[1]. HAK is also a 240-hour visa-free transit port[1]. Need longer treatment? Apply at Hainan's exit-entry administration before your visa-free period ends[1]. Details: visa and entry.

Onward to Boao Lecheng. East-ring high-speed trains run from Meilan and Haikou East stations to Boao station (the Meilan-area leg is about 35 minutes[5]; not all trains stop at Boao — Qionghai station has more services), then a short taxi into the zone[4]. By road it is roughly 1.5–2 hours via the G98 expressway[5].

Where to stay

  • Downtown (Guomao / Binhai Avenue area) — business hotels near Wanlü Garden and the seafront, closest to the city's major hospitals; the practical default for appointment-heavy stays.
  • Qilou old town — atmospheric boutique stays among the arcades, walkable to cafés and the waterfront; pleasant for mobile patients, less convenient for daily hospital runs.
  • West coast / Holiday Beach strip — newer hotels along the sand for the recovery phase; expect taxis to most clinics.

Serviced apartments are plentiful downtown and far cheaper by the week than hotels — see accommodation near hospitals.

A sample two-city plan (example)

An example only — adapt every step to your doctor's schedule:

  1. Day 1: land at HAK under Hainan's visa-free entry[1]; overnight downtown.
  2. Day 2: consultation and baseline tests at your chosen Haikou hospital, arranged in writing beforehand.
  3. Days 3–5: high-speed rail to Boao station for treatment or consultation at a Boao Lecheng hospital[4], staying beside the zone.
  4. Days 6–9: return to Haikou — or continue to Sanya — for recovery days: parks, the old town, beach time only as cleared by your doctor.
  5. Day 10: collect any duty-free purchases on departure[3] and fly out with your complete set of records — see medical records and follow-up.

When to go

November to April is the comfortable season — mild, drier, good for recovery walks — though Haikou midwinter can turn briefly cool and grey, unlike balmier Sanya. May to October is hot, humid and typhoon-exposed; northern Hainan sees direct typhoon hits in some years, so build schedule buffers and travel insurance around any summer treatment dates. If your dates are flexible, late autumn usually offers the best balance of weather, flight availability and hotel prices.

Money, shopping and practicalities

Haikou participates fully in Hainan's offshore duty-free program: each traveler leaving the island has an annual RMB 100,000 duty-free quota covering customs duty, import VAT and consumption tax, usable at approved malls in the city with collection on departure[3] — a nice extra on a treatment trip, nothing more. Set up Alipay/WeChat payments and essential apps before arrival. Ambulance: dial 120 — see the emergency guide.

Limits to keep in mind

Haikou's hospitals serve the province first; English-language case management for foreigners is patchy, and the deepest sub-specialty care in China remains on the mainland. If your treatment is at Boao Lecheng, remember its therapies are premium-priced and availability must be confirmed in writing before travel. Plan follow-up at home in advance — medical records and follow-up explains what to collect.

Întrebări frecvente

Do I need a visa to fly into Haikou?

Citizens of 61 countries can enter Hainan visa-free for up to 30 days through Haikou Meilan International Airport, with medical treatment an explicitly permitted purpose. Nationals of countries under China's nationwide visa-free policies can enter under those rules instead and travel beyond Hainan.

Why choose Haikou over Sanya for a medical trip?

Haikou is the provincial capital, so Hainan's largest public hospitals and specialist departments are concentrated here, and the rail link to the Boao Lecheng pilot zone is shorter. Sanya has better resort beaches; Haikou has better medical depth on the island.

How do I get from Haikou to Boao Lecheng?

Take the east-ring high-speed rail toward Boao or Qionghai — the Meilan airport–area leg is around 35 minutes — then a roughly 10-minute taxi from Boao station to the zone. Many hospitals in the zone arrange pickups.

Can I swim or sunbathe after my procedure in Haikou?

Only with your doctor's explicit clearance. Healing wounds and laser-treated skin usually mean no pools or sea and limited sun for a period your doctor should define. Haikou's parks and old town are good low-exertion alternatives while you wait.

Is Haikou's weather good year-round?

November to April is mild and pleasant, slightly cooler than Sanya in midwinter. Summer and early autumn are hot, humid and typhoon-prone, which can disrupt flights and outdoor plans.
