Huashan Hospital sees international patients at its International Medical Center (国际医疗中心), on the 8th floor of Building 1 at the main campus, 12 Middle Wulumuqi Road (乌鲁木齐中路12号), Jing'an District. The center is open on working days, 8 am–5 pm, and books by phone on +86 21 6248 3986 or +86 21 5288 9998, or by email at hwmc@huashan.org.cn[3][5]. The nearest metro stations are Changshu Road (Lines 1 and 7) and Jing'an Temple (Lines 2 and 7)[6], and Line 1 runs from Shanghai Railway Station to Changshu Road in six stops without a change[15]. For the hospital's full profile, departments and contacts, see our Huashan Hospital page; this guide covers the practical side — campuses, booking routes and directions.
Huashan at a glance
| Chinese name | 复旦大学附属华山医院 (Huashan Hospital, Fudan University) |
| Founded | 1907; among the first hospitals rated grade 3A (三级甲等), in 1992[1] |
| Campuses | Main campus (总院) plus Pudong, Hongqiao and Baoshan campuses in Shanghai; Huashan Hospital Fujian in Fuzhou[1] |
| International service | International Medical Center, founded 1989[2] |
| Switchboard | +86 21 5288 9999 (general)[6] |
| Website | www.huashan.org.cn (Chinese) |
In 2024 Huashan was one of 13 Shanghai public hospitals named international medical tourism pilot units — a municipal program, not a quality ranking[18].
Which campus is which
Huashan runs as one hospital on several sites, and the campus you book matters: the International Medical Center described below is at the main campus.
| Campus | Address | What to know | Nearest metro (as published) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main campus (总院) | 12 Middle Wulumuqi Road (乌鲁木齐中路12号), Jing'an[6] | International Medical Center (8F, Building 1) and the full range of outpatient departments[5] | Changshu Road (Lines 1, 7); Jing'an Temple (Lines 2, 7)[6] |
| Pudong campus (浦东院区, also called 东院), which also carries the name Shanghai International Hospital (上海国际医院) | 525 Hongfeng Road (红枫路525号, near Mingyue Road), Pudong; tel. +86 21 3871 9999[7] | Opened in 2006 in the Jinqiao area near the Biyun international community; outpatient clinics include ordinary, expert, special-needs (特需) and international medical clinics[8][1] | The hospital mentions Line 14 nearby; its directions page suggests Line 2 to Shanghai Science & Technology Museum, then a taxi[8][9] |
| Hongqiao campus (虹桥院区, also called 西院) | 958 Jinguang Road (金光路958号), Minhang[10] | Opened in 2018 with 800 beds; a neuroscience-led campus built around the hospital's national medical center for neurological diseases[1][10] | Line 2 (Xujing East) or Line 17 (Panlong Road)[11] |
| Baoshan campus (宝山院区, formerly 北院) | 518 Jingpohu Road (镜泊湖路518号, near Luxiang Road), Baoshan[7] | Opened in 2012 as Huashan North Hospital; merged into Huashan and renamed in December 2021[1][12] | Line 7, Gucun Park, exit 1[7] |
Two cautions. Only the main campus and the Pudong campus publish an international clinic; we found no international-service details for Hongqiao or Baoshan, so ask the International Medical Center before booking there. And Huashan Hospital Fujian (华山医院福建医院), which opened in May 2021, is a national regional medical center in Fuzhou run with the Fujian provincial government — not a Shanghai campus[1].
The International Medical Center (国际医疗中心)
Founded in 1989, the center runs its own outpatient clinic and inpatient ward[2]. What the hospital says about how it works:
- GP-led, then specialists. The center's own full-time physicians, with general-practice and internal-medicine training, assess, treat and follow up each international patient and arrange consultations with hospital specialists as needed; inpatients are co-managed by the center's physicians and the relevant specialists[2]. In practice you book the center, not a named department.
- One floor for most of the visit. The outpatient clinic has 23 consulting rooms with ultrasound, echocardiography, EMG, EEG, gynecological examination and rehabilitation therapy, so appointment, consultation, tests and payment can happen on the same floor[2].
- Inpatient care. 25 single rooms and VIP suites[2]; the 2025 government listing places the wards on the 14th floor of Buildings 6 and 8[4].
- Scope. Diagnosis and treatment, health management, vaccination and cross-border medical transport[2].
- Insurance. Cashless direct-billing contracts with more than 30 insurers and third-party administrators[2]; the 2024 government listing names 15 of them, including MSH China, MediLink-Global, AIA, Taikang and PICC Health[3].
- Languages. The 2024 English-language government listing gives English[3]; the 2025 French-language listing gives English, Japanese, French, German and Korean[4]. Ask for your language when you book — a listed language is not a promise of an interpreter at every visit.
Where exactly, and when
| Outpatient clinic | 8th floor, Building 1, main campus — the hospital's floor directory lists 8F as the International Medical Center (foreign-guest clinic, 外宾门诊), "Worldwide Medical Service" in English[5][3] |
| Hours | Working days, 8 am–5 pm[3] |
| Phone | +86 21 6248 3986 and +86 21 5288 9998 (international service)[3] |
| hwmc@huashan.org.cn[3] | |
| Official account of the Huashan Worldwide Medical Center (华山医院国际医疗中心), ID gh_2c497622979f[4] | |
| Emergency | Ground floor, Building 1, entrance at 493 Huashan Road (华山路493号), per the 2025 listing[4] |
One inconsistency to know about: the 2025 French-language government listing puts the outpatient clinic on the 7th floor[4], while the hospital's own floor directory and the English listing say the 8th; in the hospital's directory, 7F is the special-needs (特需) service, which is a different clinic[5]. Confirm the floor when you receive your appointment.
International center vs ordinary outpatient
Huashan's ordinary outpatient departments fill the other floors of the same building: dermatology on 3F; surgical specialties on 4F; internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery on 5F; dental, eye and ENT on 6F[5]. The international center is a separate premium tier on top — the same hospital and the same specialists behind it, but different prices, language support and booking. How the two tiers compare in general is explained in international departments explained.
Departments behind the international service. The 2024 government listing names 28 specialty departments for Huashan's international service, from International General Practice, neurosurgery, neurology, dermatology, infectious diseases and hand surgery to sports medicine, cardiology, endocrinology, oncology, ophthalmology, dentistry, intensive care, emergency medicine and clinical nutrition[3]. Our directory maps 14 of them to its specialty filters: cardiology, dental, dermatology, endocrinology, ENT, gastroenterology, general surgery, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, rehabilitation, respiratory and urology. A department on that list means the international center can involve it — not that a particular professor holds international sessions on your dates. Ask.
Booking the international center
- Write first. Email hwmc@huashan.org.cn with your passport name, date of birth, nationality, a short medical summary, key reports (translated summaries help — see getting your medical records translated), preferred dates, language and how you will pay. Our inquiry letter tool drafts it in English and Chinese.
- Or call +86 21 6248 3986 or +86 21 5288 9998 on a Chinese working day, 8 am–5 pm China time[3].
- Or use WeChat. The hospital says the center offers booking by WeChat, phone and web[2].
- Get written confirmation of the date, time, campus, floor, the specialist (if any) and the documents to bring.
- Using insurance? Confirm that your insurer is on the center's direct-billing list and ask whether a guarantee of payment is needed before the visit[2][3].
Booking the ordinary outpatient clinics
Huashan publishes seven official booking channels: its outpatient WeChat service account, the Shanghai municipal hospital platform (yuyue.shdc.org.cn), self-service kiosks on 2F, in-clinic and discharge follow-up booking, phone booking (400 820 3137, 95169 or 021-114) and two third-party platforms[13]. The rules matter for visitors:
- Booking is real-name, using the original ID card, social-security card or other valid ID[13].
- Expert clinics are appointment-only and open 2 weeks ahead; ordinary and specialty clinics open 4 weeks ahead; new slots are released at 18:00[13].
- On the day, you register on the clinic's floor within your time slot, showing the original ID and the booking text message[13].
- The outpatient enquiry line is +86 21 5288 9997[13].
- On the 114 platform, one of the hospital's listed third-party channels, Huashan's notice says foreign nationals — including holders of Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan permits — are not booked there and should go to the hospital's dedicated foreign-guest clinic (外宾门诊)[14].
So if you hold only a passport, a Home Return Permit or a Taiwan compatriot permit, plan on the international center, or ask the center first which ordinary-clinic route accepts your document. General advice on registering without a Chinese ID is in your first hospital visit without a Chinese ID.
Getting there
To the main campus (12 Middle Wulumuqi Road)
| From | Route (stations from official sources) |
|---|---|
| Shanghai Railway Station (上海火车站) | Line 1 toward Xinzhuang, 6 stops to Changshu Road — no change[15][16] |
| Hongqiao Railway Station / Hongqiao Airport T2 | Line 2 eastbound, 8 stops (7 from T2) to Jing'an Temple — no change[15][16] |
| Pudong International Airport T1/T2 | The airport station and Jing'an Temple are both on Line 2 — a long ride across the city; check the Shanghai Metro route planner for the current service[15][16] |
| City buses | 15, 45, 49, 93, 94, 824, 830, 927 to Huashan Road (华山路站); 48, 113, 506, 548 to Huashan Rd / Wulumuqi Rd[6] |
How far is it from Shanghai Railway Station? Huashan's pages give no distance, so here is what can be sourced: the two metro stations are on the same line, six stops apart, and the published Line 1 station chainage puts them about 6.6 km apart along the track[15][17]. That is not the door-to-door or road distance: for the walk from Changshu Road station to the hospital gate, and for a taxi estimate, check a map app on the day.
To the other campuses
- Pudong campus: from Shanghai Railway Station the hospital suggests the Shenchuan express bus (申川专线) to Hongfeng Road / Mingyue Road; from either Hongqiao hub or Pudong airport, Line 2 to Shanghai Science & Technology Museum and a taxi from there. A hospital shuttle links the Pudong and main campuses (from Pudong at 6:30, 8:15, 11:15 and 14:15; from the main campus at 7:15, 9:30, 12:30 and 15:30) — confirm it before relying on it[9].
- Hongqiao campus: about 7 km in a straight line from the Hongqiao transport hub; metro Line 2 (Xujing East) or Line 17 (Panlong Road); a custom bus line (闵虹3线) from the Hongqiao West Transport Center started in October 2023[11].
- Baoshan campus: Line 7, Gucun Park station, exit 1[7].
For metro tickets, ride-hailing and taxis, see getting around.
Where to stay
Because the main campus sits on Lines 1, 2 and 7, a hotel near a station on any of those lines gives you a direct ride. For hotel registration rules, accessible rooms and what to look for near a hospital, read accommodation near hospitals; for the wider city, see Shanghai.
What to bring
- The original document you booked with — passport, Home Return Permit or Taiwan compatriot permit. Real-name rules apply on both tiers.
- Medical records and imaging: recent reports, discharge summaries and scan discs, with translated summaries — see the records translation guide.
- A medication list with generic names and doses.
- Your insurance card and any guarantee of payment, if you plan to use direct billing.
- A way to pay (below).
Paying
At the international center, patients covered by a direct-billing contract may pay nothing at the counter for covered services[2]. Everyone else pays as they go. We found no public price list for the international center; ordinary-clinic fees are government-guided and lower, and the difference between the tiers is covered in international departments explained. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you travel and carry a backup — see payments with Alipay and WeChat.
Honest limits
- The international center keeps working-day hours. At night, at weekends or in an emergency, go to the emergency department — see emergency in China.
- Floors and contact details differ slightly between official listings; treat the confirmation you receive from the center as the final word.
- A listed department or language is not a guaranteed specialist or interpreter on your dates.
- Huashan cannot follow you home: plan follow-up with your own doctor before you fly — see medical records and follow-up.
- If your condition is unstable or you are not fit to fly, do not travel for a consultation; ask your doctor at home first.
Next steps
- Open the Huashan Hospital profile for departments, contacts and sources.
- Compare it with Ruijin: /compare?ids=huashan-hospital-fudan-shanghai,ruijin-hospital-shanghai, or read Ruijin Hospital for international patients.
- See other options in Shanghai hospitals for foreigners and in the directory: /hospitals?city=shanghai, for example neurology in Shanghai.
- Draft your first email with the inquiry letter tool, then let the planner fit appointments, travel and recovery together.
