Wuhan is the medical centre of central China: a city of university teaching hospitals clustered along the Yangtze, two of which — Tongji Hospital and Union Hospital — run dedicated services for foreign patients. It is also easy to reach, with direct flights into Wuhan Tianhe International Airport and a 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit option whose permitted stay area covers the whole of Hubei province for eligible nationalities[1][2]. This guide covers the hospitals worth knowing, how to get in and around, where to stay, and when to come.

Why patients consider Wuhan

Wuhan is home to the two flagship hospitals of Tongji Medical College (Huazhong University of Science and Technology), both large academic centres that see very high patient volumes across essentially every specialty. For international visitors the practical draw is that both have organised, English-capable front doors rather than leaving you to navigate a general outpatient hall alone. Costs follow China's regulated public-hospital fee schedules, and the city is well connected by air and high-speed rail if you want to combine treatment with travel elsewhere in China.

The trade-offs are real too: Wuhan has fewer private international clinics than Beijing or Shanghai, English is less common outside the dedicated international departments, and any surgical care will need follow-up arranged with a doctor at home. Weigh both sides before you book — our guide to international departments explains what these units do and do not provide.

The medical landscape

Tongji Hospital (Tongji Medical College, HUST)

Tongji Hospital states that it was the first hospital in Hubei designated by the provincial government, foreign affairs office and health commission for treating foreign patients, and that it serves as a preferred medical institution for consulates, multinational companies and international insurers in Wuhan[3]. Its International Medical Service (IMS), established in 2012, reports having treated thousands of patients from 44 countries and regions, working with international medical institutions, rescue organisations and insurance companies[3]. The hospital also notes that in 2012 it became the first Asian hospital to pass Germany's KTQ quality certification[3]. The IMS integrates outpatient care, inpatient care, surgery, rehabilitation and health management, and says it provides full translation support[3]. The main campus is at 1095 Jiefang Avenue in Hankou, with branches in the Optical Valley and other districts[3].

Union Hospital (Wuhan Xiehe)

Union Hospital — the other flagship of Tongji Medical College — runs an International Outpatient Department on its main campus at 1277 Jiefang Avenue and an International Clinic on its west campus, both described by the hospital as aimed at providing medical treatment and health care to foreign patients[4]. The hospital's English site also outlines direct billing with commercial insurers and notes that a valid identity document such as a passport is required when seeking care[4].

What to expect from large public hospitals

Both institutions are enormous public teaching hospitals: expect crowds in the general halls, appointment-based access to the international units, and payment up front unless your insurer has a direct-billing agreement. Having a department ≠ the international desk covers it — always confirm in writing that your specific treatment can be arranged through the international service, and at what price. Use our bilingual inquiry letter tool to ask, and browse hospitals in Wuhan for sourced contacts.

Getting there

Flights and the airport

Wuhan Tianhe International Airport (WUH) is the city's gateway, with direct international routes to major Asian hubs and a growing number of long-haul links; connecting via Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or Hong Kong is straightforward. A metro line runs from the airport into the city, and taxis and ride-hailing are inexpensive by Western standards. Wuhan is also one of China's biggest high-speed rail junctions — roughly four to five hours from Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou — useful if your trip includes other cities.

Visa-free options

As of October 2026, China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy applies to nationals of 57 countries travelling onward to a third country or region; Wuhan Tianhe International Airport is a designated entry port, and the permitted stay area covers all of Hubei province[1][2]. Travellers may engage in tourism, business, exchange or family visits during the stay — but activities requiring prior approval still need the appropriate visa[2]. Separately, nationals of 50 countries can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days under the unilateral visa exemption policy as of February 2026[5]. Rules change; check the National Immigration Administration's site and read our visa and entry guide before booking.

Arriving in the city

Both flagship hospitals sit on Jiefang Avenue in Hankou, on the north bank of the Yangtze[3][4]. From the airport, allow 45–60 minutes by taxi or metro to Hankou depending on traffic.

Where to stay

For most patients the practical choice is Hankou, along the Jiefang Avenue corridor: it puts you within a short taxi or metro ride of both Tongji and Union main campuses, with hotels at every price level around Zhongshan Park, Jianghan Road and Wuhan Tiandi. If your appointment is at a branch campus (for example Tongji's Optical Valley branch in the Donghu New Technology Development Zone[3]), base yourself near that campus instead — cross-city traffic can eat an hour each way. Choose a hotel near a metro station, ask for a room away from the street if you are recovering, and see our accommodation guide for booking tips that work across China.

Combining treatment with travel

Wuhan suits low-exertion sightseeing between appointments. The East Lake scenic area offers flat lakeside walks and greenways; the Hubei Provincial Museum (famous for the ancient chime bells) and the Yellow Crane Tower are short, unhurried visits; and an evening Yangtze ferry crossing or a stroll down Jianghan Road costs little energy.

Example plan (illustrative only): arrive Sunday; hospital registration and consultations Monday; tests Tuesday morning, East Lake walk in the afternoon; results review Wednesday, museum visit after; buffer day Thursday for any follow-up imaging or a second consultation; fly out Friday. Agree the real schedule with the hospital first — see combining treatment and travel for how to sequence rest days after procedures.

If your doctor approves longer-range travel, Wuhan's rail hub status makes day or overnight trips easy, but keep anything strenuous for after your final review.

Climate and the best season

Wuhan has a humid subtropical climate with four sharp seasons. Summers (June–August) are famously hot and sticky, frequently well above 35 °C — uncomfortable if you are recovering from a procedure. Winters are chilly and damp, with indoor heating less universal than in northern China. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best windows: mild temperatures, manageable humidity, and pleasant walking weather by the lakes. If your dates are flexible, aim for April–May or October–November.

Practical tips

  • Payments: set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly; hospital cashiers and most shops expect mobile payment. Carry some cash as backup. See payments in China.
  • Language: outside international departments, assume Mandarin only. Translation apps work for logistics; for consultations, request the hospital's interpretation support when booking — our language guide explains the options.
  • Getting around: the metro is extensive, cheap and signposted in English; ride-hailing via the Amap or DiDi apps avoids explaining destinations verbally. More in getting around.
  • Records: bring prior imaging and reports (with translations if possible), and before leaving request copies of everything new — see medical records and follow-up.
  • Emergencies: dial 120 for an ambulance. Union Hospital's English site lists an emergency contact and notes a passport is required for registration[4].

Limits to plan around

Be realistic about what a trip can deliver. Complex treatment often needs more than one visit; complications after you fly home must be handled by local doctors, so line up follow-up care before you travel. Published English-language information from Wuhan hospitals is thinner than from Beijing or Shanghai counterparts, and prices for specific treatments are rarely posted publicly — get written quotes. If you need extensive aftercare or have an unstable condition, discuss with your home doctor whether travelling at all is wise.

よくある質問

Do Wuhan hospitals have services for foreign patients?

Yes. Tongji Hospital runs an International Medical Service founded in 2012, and Union Hospital operates an International Outpatient Department on its main campus plus an International Clinic on its west campus. Book ahead and confirm language support for your specialty.

Can I visit Wuhan without a Chinese visa?

As of October 2026, nationals of 57 countries can use China's 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit; Wuhan Tianhe International Airport is an eligible port and the permitted stay area covers all of Hubei. Separately, a 30-day unilateral visa-free policy covers 50 countries. Check the NIA website before booking.

When is the best time of year for a medical trip to Wuhan?

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most comfortable. Summers are very hot and humid, which can be hard on recovery; winters are damp and chilly.

How many days should I plan in Wuhan?

A health check-up or dental consultation can fit in 2–3 days, but imaging reviews, second opinions or minor procedures usually need 4–7 days. Surgery requires more time plus follow-up; agree the schedule with the hospital before you fly.

Is treatment in Wuhan cheaper than in Beijing or Shanghai?

Public-hospital fees are government-regulated across China, so headline differences between major cities are usually modest. No official like-for-like price comparison is published, so ask each hospital for a written estimate for your specific treatment.
