Haematology
The Department of Hematology of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated with Xiamen University is a key clinical medical specialty in Xiamen integrating medical care, education, and research; a national standardized residency training base and drug clinical trial institution; and also an authorized discipline for clinical medicine master's and doctoral degrees at Xiamen University and Fujian Medical University. The department consists of three medical units: Hematology Ward 1, Hematology Ward 2, and the Hematology Transplant Unit. It is equipped with 93 beds, including 20 laminar-flow beds and 5 Class 100 hematopoietic stem cell transplantation rooms. The current physician team comprises 18 members, including 12 with senior professional titles, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 4 master's supervisors. More than 90% of the members hold master's degrees or higher, forming a high-level clinical and research team.
Distinctive diagnostic and treatment strengths The department centers on a standardized diagnosis and treatment system for multiple myeloma, establishing an advanced whole-course myeloma management model in China. Relying on a multidisciplinary team (MDT) platform and strictly following international diagnostic and treatment guidelines, it carries out standardized treatment pathways including precise staging assessment, autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and targeted treatment with proteasome inhibitors and immunomodulatory agents. Combined with minimal residual disease (MRD) monitoring technology, these approaches have significantly improved patients’ long-term survival rates, placing the department’s overall diagnostic and treatment level among the advanced ranks in China.
In the field of precision diagnosis and treatment of anemia, the department was among the first to implement genetic testing, flow cytometry, and molecular classification technologies, establishing a full-process management system from etiological screening to individualized treatment. Led by senior transfusion medicine experts, the professional team strictly implements standardized blood component transfusion procedures, optimizing the safety and efficacy of transfusion therapy.
On May 12, 2026, our hospital was officially designated as the “Collection Hospital of the China Marrow Donor Program Donor Information Database” and the “Hematopoietic Stem Cell Registry Sampling Site.” It is the second designated hospital in Xiamen for unrelated hematopoietic stem cell collection and also the only hospital in Xiamen simultaneously qualified for initial donor screening, re-examination, collection, and patient transplantation. The first collection was completed on the same day (Mr. Fu, the 181st case in Xiamen). To date, 5 cases of unrelated hematopoietic stem cell collection have been completed at our hospital’s collection site; the volunteers collected on August 4 were the 6th and 7th cases collected by our hospital. A total of 17 physical examination services and 15 registry sampling procedures have been completed, earning unanimous praise from donor volunteers and the Red Cross for efficient, high-quality service. The Department of Hematology of our hospital began conducting allogeneic stem cell transplantation in 2002 and became a designated transplantation hospital of the China Marrow Donor Program in 2008. Obtaining collection qualifications this time has enabled a one-stop closed loop of “registry enrollment—physical examination—collection—transplantation.”
Specialized full-course management The department continues to innovate in the management of hematological diseases: - Comprehensive hemophilia management mechanism: Led by Professor Wang Sili, this integrates modules including coagulation factor replacement therapy, joint health monitoring, rehabilitation training, and genetic counseling, establishing a full-cycle management model covering “diagnosis—treatment—follow-up.” The annual incidence of bleeding events among patients has decreased by more than 40%, and the related achievements have received promotion as a provincial key clinical technology. - Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: As a certified transplantation center of the China Marrow Donor Program, Taiwan Tzu Chi Bone Marrow Registry, and cord blood banks, the department has completed more than 400 allogeneic transplants in total, including more than 150 transplants for children with thalassemia. The long-term survival rate has reached more than 92%, and the cumulative number of transplants ranks among the top ten nationwide. In the field of autologous transplantation for myeloma and lymphoma, the 5-year progression-free survival rate has exceeded 65%, with technical maturity reaching a leading level in China.
Research and academic leadership The department focuses on the forefront of immunotherapy for hematologic malignancies and has conducted more than 20 studies, including CAR-T cell therapy and clinical trials of novel targeted drugs. Over the past five years, it has undertaken 15 national- and provincial/municipal-level scientific research projects and received 3 Xiamen Science and Technology Awards. Through the development of subspecialties and upgrades in precision diagnosis and treatment technologies, it continues to advance the diagnosis and treatment of hematological diseases toward international standards.
Specialized outpatient services The department operates specialty clinics for bone marrow transplantation, thalassemia, multiple myeloma, and hemophilia, providing patients with “one-stop” precision diagnosis and treatment services and helping achieve early diagnosis and treatment as well as long-term standardized management of disease. At the same time, the outpatient service attaches great importance to multidisciplinary collaboration (MDT) and whole-course management, formulates dedicated diagnostic and treatment strategies for difficult and critically ill cases, and provides long-term standardized follow-up for chronic hematological diseases, comprehensively safeguarding patients’ lives and health with excellent technology and warm service.
