The Department of Pharmacy of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated with Xiamen University is a comprehensive technical and functional department integrating drug supply, scientific research, teaching, and management. Its talent structure is scientifically and rationally designed, the qualifications and educational backgrounds of its staff fully meet the requirements of their positions, and its in-service pharmaceutical professionals are capable of meeting all work needs in a comprehensive manner. The department comprises multiple units, including the Outpatient Western Pharmacy, Outpatient Traditional Chinese Pharmacy, Emergency Pharmacy, Central Pharmacy, Intravenous Preparation Center, Drug Storehouse, Clinical Pharmacy Office, Drug Clinical Trial Institution, and Jinbang Pharmacy. It currently has 99 pharmaceutical professionals, including 28 with senior professional titles, 52 with intermediate professional titles, and 19 with junior professional titles; 1 doctoral graduate, 15 master's graduates, 72 holders of bachelor's degrees, and 11 others. The Department of Pharmacy adheres to the principle of “patient-centeredness,” strengthens hospital pharmaceutical affairs management, actively expands pharmaceutical services, and ensures that patients receive safe, effective, economical, and rational medication. In 2017, the Department of Pharmacy received the “Advanced Collective for the Support Work of the Xiamen Meeting of BRICS Leaders” award from the Xiamen Municipal Government. It is a sentinel hospital for the national and provincial monitoring of adverse reactions to drugs and cosmetics, a member institution of the National Alliance of Geriatric Pharmacy, and a standing committee member institution of the Anticoagulation Alliance of the Fujian Pharmaceutical Association. Discipline development is key to the comprehensive development of the Department of Pharmacy. The department is a national clinical pharmacist training base and an undergraduate internship base for clinical pharmacy at Fujian Medical University. It undertakes undergraduate clinical pharmacy course teaching for Xiamen University and enrolls master's students from Xiamen University, Fujian Medical University, and Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The department emphasizes the coordinated development of clinical practice and scientific research, actively participates in various academic exchange activities, organizes a national continuing-education training course on safe and rational medication every year, and undertakes a number of national-, Fujian Province-, and Xiamen City-level projects, providing a scientific basis for clinical medication. The Department of Pharmacy actively expands pharmaceutical services, including pharmaceutical ward rounds, medication reconciliation, pharmaceutical outpatient services, multidisciplinary integrated outpatient services, therapeutic drug monitoring, pharmacogenetic monitoring, adverse drug reaction monitoring, and online and offline medication consultations. It currently has 8 full-time specialized clinical pharmacists covering the ICU, Department of Respiratory Medicine, Department of Medical Oncology, Department of Pediatrics, Department of Gastroenterology, Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Department of Endocrinology, and other departments. More than 3,000 therapeutic drug monitoring tests and more than 1,300 pharmacogenetic tests are completed annually, and more than 2,000 adverse drug reactions are reported each year to the Provincial Drug Adverse Reaction Monitoring Center. In recent years, the pharmacy team has achieved excellent results in multiple competitions, including the Special Prize in the Fujian Division of the 2024 Surgical Pharmacy MDT Blood Glucose Management Case Competition, the First Prize in the 2024 Xiamen Pharmaceutical Service Classic Case Competition, the Excellence Award in the 2024 Fujian Pharmacist Skills Competition, the First Prize in the 2023 First Xiamen Clinical Pharmacist Classic Case Speech Competition, the Special Prize in the Fujian Division of the 2022 Surgical Pharmacy MDT Diagnosis and Treatment Case Competition, the First Prize in the 2022 Xiamen Typical Adverse Drug Reaction Case Competition, and Third Prize in the Southern Division Semifinals of the 2021 “Chinese Pharmacist Professional Skills Competition.”
