It was built with donations from patriotic overseas Chinese and prominent local figures to promote Mr. Sun Yat-sen’s spirit of “the world belongs to all and benefiting society.” Dr. Lin Wenqing, then president of Xiamen University and a medical expert, served as its first president, making it Xiamen University’s first affiliated hospital. As a large tertiary Grade A general hospital, it currently has 50 clinical and medical-technical departments (including four national key clinical specialties—Major General Surgery, Orthopedics, Gastroenterology and Medical Laboratory Medicine—and 15 provincial key clinical specialties), and 4 renowned physician studios. The hospital has strong capabilities, with nearly 1,000 physicians at the rank of associate chief physician or above; in 2025, its approved funding for National Natural Science Foundation of China projects ranked first among all hospitals in Xiamen. The hospital currently has 2,500 authorized beds, and in 2025 the number of outpatient and emergency visits was nearly 2.3 million. The hospital received an A+ rating for four consecutive years in the nationwide performance assessment of tertiary public hospitals, known as the “National Examination,” and was included for three consecutive editions in the “Top 100 Top Hospitals” of the China Hospital Competitiveness Ranking. Hospital President Professor Yin Zhenyu is a nationally renowned expert in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, an expert receiving a special allowance from the State Council, and was named one of the “Top Ten Medical Influential Experts” for 2025.
