[Department Overview] The Department of Vascular Surgery of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Xiamen University was established in 2007 and was the first independently organized vascular surgery department in southwestern Fujian. Integrating medical care, teaching, and research, it is a National Clinical Key Specialty Construction Unit—General Surgery (Vascular Surgery), and a Fujian Provincial Clinical Key Specialty—General Surgery (Vascular Surgery). As the affiliated unit of the Xiamen Peripheral Vascular Interventional Technology Quality Control Center, the department is fully responsible for standardized management, quality supervision, and continuous improvement of peripheral vascular interventional technology in Xiamen. It is also an “Excellent Thrombosis Prevention and Treatment Center” under the National Pulmonary Embolism and Deep Vein Thrombosis Prevention and Treatment Capacity-Building Project, and has received honors including the Municipal Youth Civilization Award and the Women’s Civilization Post of Municipal Government Organs. The department has 42 approved beds and 33 medical staff, including 12 physicians and 21 nurses; 4 doctors and 9 master’s degree holders; and 7 staff with senior professional titles, forming a highly qualified and well-structured professional team. Led by Huang Xiaojin, chief physician and director of Vascular Surgery, the department consistently follows a “patient-centered” service philosophy and is committed to providing high-quality medical care. It has strong technical capabilities and has achieved notable advances in minimally invasive specialty techniques, attaining the goals of less trauma, less pain, faster recovery, and shorter hospitalization; its overall medical level ranks among the best in Fujian Province. In 2025, outpatient and emergency visits totaled 15,060, discharges totaled 2,024, and 1,524 operations were completed, including 1,076 level-III and 384 level-IV operations, which represent technical difficulty; level-III and level-IV operations accounted for 95.8%, bed utilization was 110.67%, and the CMI was 2.96, demonstrating the department’s strong capability in high-difficulty surgery and its disciplinary outreach. The department has also established close collaborative relationships with leading domestic vascular surgery centers, including the Vascular Surgery Department of Shanghai Changhai Hospital and the Vascular Surgery Department of Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital Group. It is a minimally invasive technology training base for lower-extremity venous diseases of the Ninth People’s Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and a cultivation unit for the construction of a wound repair specialty of the China Medical Doctor Association, providing strong technical support and an academic exchange platform for continuing development.
[Scope of Diagnosis and Treatment] Vascular surgery covers a broad range of conditions, including all arterial, venous, and lymphatic diseases except those of the heart and cerebral vessels. Specifically: 1. Arterial diseases: abdominal aortic aneurysm, thoracic aortic dissection, visceral artery aneurysm, carotid stenosis, lower-extremity arteriosclerotic obliterative disease, diabetic foot, acute arterial embolism, inflammatory arterial occlusive diseases, and arteriosclerotic obliterative diseases. 2. Venous diseases: lower-extremity varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, post-thrombotic syndrome, and non-obstructive venous diseases. 3. Lymphatic diseases: lymphangitis, erysipelas, and lymphedema. 4. Other diseases: arteriovenous fistula, hemangioma, and vascular malformations. The department has four subspecialty groups: arterial intervention, venous intervention, varicose veins and lymphedema, and wound repair, providing refined and precise diagnosis and treatment of specialty diseases.
[Specialized Techniques] On the basis of conventional open vascular surgery, the department makes full use of the hospital’s technical and equipment advantages to vigorously perform minimally invasive interventional procedures, forming a specialized technical system centered on minimally invasive treatment and guided by precision. I. Minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins The department has extensive clinical experience in minimally invasive treatment of lower-extremity varicose veins and performs more than 1,000 such operations annually, ranking first in the province. Laser, radiofrequency, sclerotherapy injection, and other minimally invasive treatments are routinely performed. In 2025, the department successfully performed Fujian’s first mechanochemical ablation at room temperature (MOCA) for lower-extremity varicose veins. In 2026, Director Huang Xiaojin’s team achieved another breakthrough by successfully performing Fujian’s first cyanoacrylate vein glue closure procedure at room temperature. This is an advanced minimally invasive procedure for varicose veins. Its greatest advantage is the absence of high-temperature burn risk; surgery can be performed under local anesthesia, the incision is only needle-hole sized, prolonged postoperative compression bandaging is unnecessary, and hospitalization and recovery are short. It is particularly suitable for older adults and patients with varicose veins who cannot tolerate traumatic surgery. Its successful implementation marks the department’s varicose vein diagnosis and treatment entering a new stage of noninvasive and comfortable care. II. Endovascular treatment of aortic diseases The department has mature expertise in minimally invasive endovascular treatment of aortic diseases and routinely performs endovascular exclusion of abdominal aortic aneurysms and endovascular repair of type B thoracic aortic dissection. As one of the first institutions in Asia and the first in southwestern Fujian to use modular stent grafts for type B thoracic aortic dissection, it has maintained regional leadership in minimally invasive treatment of aortic diseases. III. Interventional treatment of lower-extremity arteriosclerotic obliterative disease The department routinely performs minimally invasive interventions such as balloon angioplasty plus stent implantation for lower-extremity arteriosclerotic occlusion, and has extensive experience in comprehensive treatment of lower-extremity arteriosclerotic obliterative disease and diabetic foot. Interventional treatment has helped many patients with diabetes avoid amputation. IV. Prevention and treatment system for venous thromboembolism (VTE) As a core department participating in construction of the hospital’s VTE prevention and treatment system, it leads hospital-wide lecture tours on VTE prevention and treatment, improves prevention and control systems and collaboration mechanisms, and promotes standardized tools and health education. It was rated an “Excellent Thrombosis Prevention and Treatment Center” under the national capacity-building project and routinely performs standardized treatments such as inferior vena cava filter placement plus deep vein thrombectomy. V. Supermicrosurgical treatment of lymphedema In 2025, the department successfully performed southwestern Fujian’s first lymphovenous anastomosis reconstruction. This extremely difficult operation requires precise anastomosis of multiple lymphatic vessels and veins under a supermicroscope to reconstruct lymphatic drainage pathways. It requires exceptional precision and filled a gap in supermicrosurgical treatment of lymphedema in southwestern Fujian. Deng Yapeng, a senior nurse and nursing clinical leader, is one of Xiamen’s first internationally certified lymphedema therapists. She provides individualized assessment and comprehensive decongestive treatment in the department’s lymphedema nursing clinic. Online nursing consultation is also available, extending professional care to patients’ homes and establishing a full-process lymphedema diagnosis and treatment system integrating hospital treatment and home rehabilitation. VI. Wound repair and specialty nursing As a cultivation unit for the construction of a wound repair specialty of the China Medical Doctor Association, the department has extensive experience in repair and treatment of complex wounds, including chronic wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, and venous ulcers. Lin Jinzhen, a senior nurse and nursing clinical leader, is a specialist nurse in wound, ostomy, and continence care certified by the Chinese Nursing Association. Working with the medical team, she provides standardized nursing and rehabilitation guidance for patients with acute and chronic wounds and ostomies. The department has also expanded integrated doctor-nurse home dressing-change services, extending professional medical care to patients’ homes and providing convenient, continuous, standardized nursing for patients with wounds and limited mobility, thereby substantially improving the care experience and rehabilitation quality.
[Expert Team] The Department of Vascular Surgery has a highly qualified, well-structured professional team with strong technical capabilities. It currently has 1 chief physician, 2 associate chief physicians, 4 doctors, 9 master’s degree holders, and 7 staff with senior professional titles.
