Dermatologic Plastic and Aesthetic Department
The Department of Dermatology, Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Medicine of Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine was reconstituted through the reintegration of the Department of Dermatology at the Hubin Campus, the Medical Aesthetic Center, the Department of Dermatology and Aesthetic Medicine at the Qiantang Campus, and the Department of Dermatology at the Xixi Campus. It is the earliest-established specialized dermatology department in Zhejiang Province. It enjoys a high reputation in the field of external surgery in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Zhejiang Province, and has distinctive characteristics and relatively complete academic perspectives in TCM external surgery and the prevention and treatment of skin diseases. It has successively undertaken the construction of a national key clinical specialty under the “12th Five-Year Plan,” the construction of key specialties and key disciplines under the “12th Five-Year Plan” of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the “13th Five-Year Plan” Zhejiang Province key-discipline construction project in traditional Chinese medicine (integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine), and the construction of the Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Laboratory of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Dermatology). It is currently a doctoral and master’s degree-granting site in TCM external surgery at Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, a postdoctoral research station in TCM external surgery at Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, the chairing institution of the Dermatologic Cosmetology Branch of the China Association of Chinese Medicine and the Dermatology Branch and TCM Cosmetology Branch of the Zhejiang Association of Chinese Medicine, and a standardized residency training base for TCM and clinical medicine in Zhejiang Province. It has developed into an integrated discipline combining clinical practice, teaching, and scientific research, with prominent TCM characteristics and an emphasis on the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine.
The team focuses on three major areas of strength—atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and plantar warts—leveraging the advantages of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, emphasizing the simultaneous treatment of internal and external conditions as well as therapies that are simple, convenient, economical, and effective, while actively introducing modern technologies and establishing a development direction based on integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. The department currently operates more than 10 specialized outpatient clinics, including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, foot diseases, hair loss, pigmentary skin diseases, and photosensitive skin diseases; it conducts distinctive TCM external-treatment programs such as foot-disease repair and treatment, TCM herbal facial masks, fire needling, and cupping. It also carries out new technologies and projects, including treatment of pigmentary skin diseases with various laser devices, chemical peels with fruit acids, and facial rejuvenation, and has developed three specialized in-hospital preparations: Jianpi Zhiyang Granules, Qingre Zhiyang Granules, and Huoxue Shengfa Capsules. The discipline regularly organizes academic exchanges and continuing education training courses each year, substantially enhancing its influence and recognition. It is a leading team in the TCM sector within the province. As part of the current study and exploration of the thoughts and experience of renowned senior TCM physicians, it plans to gradually introduce more distinctive specialized TCM treatment programs, such as TCM herbal sachet packs, TCM medicated baths, and individualized on-site formulation. The medical team of the discipline comprises 37 physicians, including one recipient of a State Council special allowance and two provincial-level renowned TCM physicians. Among the team members are one chairperson of a national academic society and two chairpersons of provincial academic societies. The team has undertaken four projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, more than 10 provincial- and ministerial-level projects, and multiple projects at the department and bureau level. It has received the Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Award for Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Zhejiang Provincial Award for Scientific and Technological Progress in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Award. It has obtained two national invention patents and five utility model patents, and department members have published more than 20 SCI-indexed papers over the past five years.
