Neurological Special Examinations Department
Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the earliest hospitals in the province to conduct examinations such as electroencephalography, transcranial Doppler, and electromyography. After more than 40 years of development, the Department of Special Neurological Examinations, which is affiliated with the Department of Neurology, now has 9 medical staff members: one with a doctoral degree, and most with master's degrees. They have a strong theoretical and clinical foundation; among them are 1 person with a senior professional title, 6 senior attending physicians, and 2 residents. Our department has first-class modern medical equipment, including transcranial Doppler instruments, electroencephalography, dynamic video electroencephalography, electromyography and evoked-potential instruments, vestibular function testing instruments, multichannel sleep analysis systems, and more. It currently offers all of the following examinations: intracranial Doppler blood-flow imaging, color Doppler ultrasonography of the cervical vessels, paperless electroencephalography, sphenoidal-electrode electroencephalography, dynamic electroencephalography, needle electromyography, nerve conduction velocity, electroneurography (including F waves, H reflex, and blink reflex), sensory threshold measurement, repetitive nerve stimulation, micro-shift potential measurement, brainstem auditory evoked potentials, visual evoked potentials, somatosensory evoked potentials, event-related potentials, sympathetic skin response and heart-rate variability, tremor analysis, and other examinations. These not only provide important bases for diagnosis and differential diagnosis for departments such as neurology and neurosurgery, endocrinology, general internal medicine, psychiatry, orthopedics, pediatrics, rehabilitation, acupuncture, tuina, ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology, the ICU, and the emergency room, but also provide electrophysiological data for formulating preoperative plans, assessing prognosis, and monitoring treatment efficacy for many types of diseases. In teaching, our department has not only professional teaching staff, but also jointly undertakes the theoretical and clinical instruction of many undergraduate students, graduate students, and physicians undergoing standardized training at the teaching hospital.
Technical Advantages
Our department has also taken the lead in introducing multiple projects in clinical diagnosis and treatment, including 32-channel dynamic video EEG monitoring, the bubble test, blink-reflex examination, dual-channel auditory evoked potentials and response-threshold testing, trigeminal nerve evoked-potential examination, sympathetic skin response examination, tremor analysis, etc., as well as botulinum toxin treatment for hemifacial spasm, blepharospasm, spasmodic torticollis, focal dystonia, primary headache, etc., some of which have reached a leading level within the province.
Academic Standing
The Department of Neurology is a key specialty of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a member institution of the National Encephalopathy Collaborative Group, a key development discipline for integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine in encephalopathy under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a key discipline for integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine under the Zhejiang Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the leading institution of the Zhejiang Stroke Collaborative Group, and a clinical pharmacology base of the State Food and Drug Administration. The head of the Department of Special Neurological Examinations is a committee member of the Electrophysiology Group of the Neurology Branches of the Zhejiang Medical Association and the Zhejiang Physicians Association
Research Achievements
Our department actively carries out research activities, has led or participated in multiple national- and provincial-level research projects and new technology and new project initiatives, and has received multiple awards, including the second prize of the Zhejiang Science and Technology Award for Traditional Chinese Medicine and the third and fourth prizes for new technologies and new projects of Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
