Neurosurgery
The Department of Neurosurgery of Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the earliest neurosurgical departments in Zhejiang. Since its first neurosurgical operation in the 1950s, it has developed into a key TCM discipline of Zhejiang Province and a leading unit or center in integrated Chinese-Western neurosurgery, cerebrovascular disease, craniocerebral trauma, emergency trauma and neurological rehabilitation.
The department has two treatment centers (Qiantang and Hubin), 56 medical staff, and surgical quality and difficulty among the highest in the province. Its subspecialties include neuro-oncology; skull-base surgery; cerebrovascular disease; functional neurosurgery; spinal and spinal-cord surgery; and craniocerebral trauma and neurological rehabilitation. Services cover gliomas and complex intracranial masses, skull-base tumors, aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, carotid-cavernous fistula, moyamoya disease, acute cerebral infarction and hypertensive hemorrhage, trigeminal neuralgia, hydrocephalus, complex epilepsy, Parkinson and Alzheimer disease, diabetic peripheral nerve injury and foot, herpes zoster, spinal tumors and trauma, and early rehabilitation after severe brain injury. Minimally invasive surgery keeps its total resection, cerebrovascular surgery/intervention and post-traumatic rehabilitation rates at an international leading level.
Equipment includes a neurosurgical robot; US GE and German Siemens 3D-DSA systems; Medtronic surgical optics, magnetic navigation and neuroimaging workstation; Zeiss and Leica fluorescence microscopes; the Swedish Leksell stereotactic frame; US Stryker and Snake Brand power systems; TCD; complete imported instruments; and a large hyperbaric oxygen chamber. The department holds 1 National Natural Science Foundation project, 2 provincial projects and 9 bureau-level projects, and has published more than 20 SCI and more than 50 domestic papers, collaborating with Hiroshima University and Greifswald University. Hyperbaric oxygen, acupuncture, Chinese medicine and physiotherapy substantially improve postoperative recovery and prognosis.
Technical advantages
The two centers have 56 medical staff and complete subspecialties. Their robot, 3D-DSA, navigation, microscopes, TCD and other equipment support minimally invasive treatment, maintaining leading rates of tumor resection, cerebrovascular surgery/intervention success and post-traumatic rehabilitation.
Academic status
Key discipline of TCM in Zhejiang; chair unit of the Zhejiang Society of Integrated Chinese-Western Medicine Neurosurgery Branch; key cerebrovascular rescue assistance unit; integrated cerebrovascular disease center; craniocerebral trauma rescue center; neurological trauma assistance unit; integrated neurological rehabilitation center; and key neurological rehabilitation specialty of the Zhejiang Hospital Administration Bureau.
