Clinical Blood Transfusion Department

The Clinical Transfusion Department of Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established in 2023. It is the first innovative comprehensive discipline in China to integrate clinical care, stem-cell transplantation, transfusion therapy, and scientific research. It is a secondary clinical discipline integrating hematology and transfusion medicine.

The department has 26 clinical research beds and 4 Class 100 sterile beds; one transfusion therapy room (located at Qiantang Campus); and blood banks at both Qiantang Campus and Hubin Campus. It has a reference laboratory, blood storage room, difficult blood-type matching room, four-item transfusion testing laboratory, blood issuing and blood-type cross-matching room, basic laboratory, teaching room, and doctors office. Equipment includes sterile laminar-flow beds, a blood cell separator, freezers, an agitator platelet storage box, microscopes, desktop computers, blood-storage refrigerators, a plasma thawer, a low-temperature workbench, and a thromboelastography analyzer, among others.

Technical Strengths

Diagnosis and treatment of hematologic and internal medicine diseases; stem-cell transplantation technology and clinical applications of stem cells; biological therapy; transfusion therapy; blood-cell separation and apheresis; plasma exchange; platelet-rich plasma (PRP) technology; difficult blood-type identification, blood issuing and matching, and guidance on the rational use of blood components. Diseases covered include: hematologic diseases (hematologic malignancies, bone-marrow failure disorders, etc.); hemolytic diseases (neonatal hemolysis, drug-induced hemolysis, etc.); coagulation-disorder diseases (coagulation disorders related to hematologic diseases, perinatal transfusion guidance, obstetric amniotic-fluid embolism, and emergency treatment of pathological obstetric emergencies); emergency and critical-care rescue: snake venom bites, drug and toxicant poisoning, acute pancreatitis, epidemic hemorrhagic fever, renal failure, and electrolyte disorders; diagnosis and treatment of immune-related diseases: myasthenia gravis, SLE, and perinatal management (antenatal guidance for Rh D-negative pregnant women, perinatal transfusion guidance, and prevention of RhD alloimmunization); tissue engineering: repair of joint tissue injuries, surgical burns, pressure ulcers, diabetic gangrene, etc.; and applications of cell therapy and PRP technology.

Vice-chair of the Zhejiang Provincial Blood Quality Committee; vice-chair of the Zhejiang Provincial Transfusion Management Committee; committee member of the Hematology Branch of the China Association of Chinese Medicine; committee member of the Hematologic Diseases Branch of the Chinese Association of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine; committee member of the Hematologic Diseases Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Doctors Association; committee member of the Lymphoma Committee of the Zhejiang Anti-Cancer Association; committee member of the Hematologic Diseases Professional Committee of the Zhejiang Association of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine; committee member of the Zhejiang Provincial Transfusion Work Committee; youth committee member of the Hematologic Diseases Professional Committee of the Zhejiang Association of Chinese Medicine; member of the Leukemia Research Group of the National Clinical Base for Hematologic Diseases; committee member of the first Expert Committee of the Yangtze River Delta Integrated Clinical Transfusion Quality Control and Management Committee; and member of the Hematology Professional Group of the Expert Volunteer Committee for Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine of the China Volunteer Association, among other academic committees, and is building the department. At present, our department is a department being developed for national- and provincial-level studios of famous veteran traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, and is the Zhejiang Provincial Microtransplantation Collaboration Center and Car-T Cell Therapy Collaboration Center.

Research Achievements

The department has received 2 Zhejiang Provincial Government Science and Technology Progress Awards, 1 Zhejiang Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Science and Technology Progress Award from the Chinese Association of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, and 1 second prize for new hospital technologies and projects. Department director Zhuang Haifeng, as the pioneer of the discipline’s development and director of the Luo Xiusu National Famous Veteran Traditional Chinese Medicine Physician Inheritance Studio, undertakes multiple national and provincial/ministerial scientific research projects and develops new technologies and projects in the discipline. Guided by the discipline motto of upholding fundamentals while pursuing innovation, he leads a young and energetic team forward with great strides and pioneering innovation.
