Laboratory Medicine
The Department of Medical Laboratory of Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a comprehensive clinical support discipline integrating medical services, teaching, and research. It is an undergraduate teaching base and an authorized master’s-degree training site in Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, as well as an important supporting platform for the National Clinical Research Base for Traditional Chinese Medicine. In accordance with the Medical Laboratory Quality and Competence Accreditation Criteria, it passed CNAS ISO15189 medical laboratory accreditation in 2013, becoming the first such institution in the province’s traditional Chinese medicine system. The department strictly implements the quality policy of “Accuracy and timeliness, scientific management, quality service, and continuous improvement,” providing rapid, accurate, and first-class laboratory diagnostic services. In recent years, it has focused on discipline development and serves as an institutional unit that is a standing committee member of the Laboratory Medicine Branch of the China Association of Chinese Medicine; the chairing institution of the Laboratory Technology Application Research Branch of the Zhejiang Association of Chinese Medicine; a vice-chairing institution of the Laboratory Medicine Branch of the Zhejiang Medical Association; a vice-chairing institution and the institution whose representative chairs the Youth Committee of the Laboratory Medicine Branch of the Zhejiang Association of Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine; a vice-chairing institution of the Immunology Special Committee of the Zhejiang Association of Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine; a vice-chairing institution of the Evidence-Based Medicine Special Committee of the Zhejiang Medical Doctors Association; a committee-member institution of the Laboratory Medicine Branch of the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine; and an institution of assessors for medical laboratory accreditation of the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS). The department currently has 104 employees, including 13 with senior professional titles, 55 with intermediate professional titles, 40 holding doctoral or master’s degrees, and 3 postgraduate supervisors.
Technical Advantages
The department follows a coordinated multi-campus development model and currently has fully automated clinical chemistry and immunology, hematology, and urinalysis lines, as well as fluorescent quantitative PCR instruments, flow cytometers, mass spectrometers, sequencers, and other advanced instruments and equipment. It undertakes clinical laboratory testing for all departments throughout the hospital, including outpatient services, emergency services, inpatient services, the ICU, operating rooms, and physical examination services. It routinely performs tests covering clinical biochemistry, clinical immunology, clinical hematology, clinical pathogenology, clinical body-fluid analysis, and clinical genetics. It has established a 24-hour emergency-testing green channel, whole-process quality control through an intelligent LIS, real-time sharing of test results across multiple terminals (doctor workstations/mobile terminals/self-service terminals), and a graded warning system for critical values. Relying on clinical laboratory testing, it has established an interdisciplinary “Precision Medicine Center” and conducts tumor gene mutation testing, therapeutic drug concentration monitoring, genetic screening for hereditary hearing loss, and metagenomic testing of pathogenic microorganisms, providing an evidence-based foundation for precision medicine. Rapid testing supports the efficient operation of the Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center.
Academic Status
The department undertakes teaching for the medical laboratory science, clinical medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and other programs of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, as well as internship supervision and training for graduates from multiple universities. Each year, it completes the enrollment and training of multiple postgraduate students in Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics. The courses currently offered include Diagnostics, Clinical Biochemical Testing Technology, Clinical Immunology Testing Technology, and Clinical Microbiology Testing Technology.
Research Achievements
In recent years, the department has undertaken more than 20 projects at the national, provincial/ministerial, and departmental/bureau levels, and has published nearly 100 papers in domestic and international journals, including more than 50 papers indexed by SCI. Department members have served as chief editors or co-editors of multiple nationally planned textbooks, organized multiple national- and provincial-level continuing medical education programs, and established multiple new technologies and projects each year. The department has a certain degree of influence in the medical laboratory field in China.
