Otolaryngology

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology of Zhejiang Hospital was established in 1985. Under the personal care and guidance of Professors Cai Yuehou and Shi Yisheng, renowned Chinese otorhinolaryngology experts, it has continued to grow and develop. After several decades of development, it has now become a first-level discipline of a Grade A tertiary hospital, with a strong team of professionals, advanced technical capabilities, distinctive disciplinary features, and integrated medical care, scientific research, teaching, and healthcare. The department currently has 5 personnel with senior professional titles, 7 with intermediate professional titles, and 5 with junior professional titles, including 2 doctors and 9 master's degree holders. It is equipped with a large number of advanced specialized devices, including a German-made comprehensive otorhinolaryngology treatment unit, STOZE and XION endoscopic systems, a ZISS surgical microscope, an American imaging workstation, a Smith & Nephew radiofrequency ablation plasma surgical system, a Medtronic otorhinolaryngology powered surgical system, an Israeli CO2 laser surgical treatment device, Danish pure-tone audiometers, acoustic immittance meters, otoacoustic emission analyzers, and sleep respiratory monitoring equipment. All outpatient consultation rooms have adopted high-definition full-endoscopic display systems.

The department currently performs all types of surgical treatment in otorhinolaryngology. Rhinology: endoscopic resection of benign and malignant nasal cavity tumors; functional or radical endoscopic sinus-opening surgery; septoplasty; middle and inferior turbinate plasty; anterior ethmoidal nerve branch transection and pterygoid canal nerve branch transection for allergic rhinitis; and resection of benign and malignant nasopharyngeal tumors, among others. Otology: endoscopic or microscopic tympanoplasty; modified radical mastoidectomy; stapes prosthesis implantation; external auditory canal plasty; preauricular fistula excision; and resection of benign ear tumors, among others. Laryngology: partial laryngectomy with laryngeal function reconstruction; laser or plasma minimally invasive resection of benign and malignant laryngeal tumors under suspension laryngoscopy; vocal cord polyp or cyst excision; plasma uvulopalatopharyngoplasty for snoring; lateral pharyngeal wall plasty for snoring; minimally invasive plasma tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy; minimally invasive plasma epiglottic cyst excision; and resection of benign and malignant pharyngeal tumors, among others.

In recent years, the department has also actively developed a wide range of distinctive diagnostic and treatment programs, including skin prick testing and serological allergen testing; sublingual desensitization-specific immunotherapy for allergic rhinitis; biologic therapy for allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps; nasal cryotherapy for epistaxis; Eustachian tube insufflation for secretory otitis media; individualized comprehensive distinctive treatments for different types of vertigo, tinnitus, and sudden hearing loss; and repositioning treatment for otolithiasis and vestibular rehabilitation.
