Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Shanghai University of TCM
The Department of Nephrology of Yueyang Hospital, affiliated with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, was established in the 1980s. It is one of the earliest nephrology specialties in China founded on traditional Chinese medicine/integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. Under the leadership of renowned TCM and integrated-medicine nephrology experts, including Professors Zhang Tian and Wu Zhiying and Director Wang Yi, it successively became an A-level specialty for designated diseases of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a development unit for advantageous designated diseases in Shanghai, and a key specialty for designated diseases under the 12th Five-Year Plan of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It also obtained a construction project for the Peng Peichu National Famous TCM Doctor Inheritance Studio of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The department structure includes specialty wards (70 open beds: 50 at the main hospital and 20 at the Wujing Branch), a hemodialysis center (100 beds), a peritoneal dialysis room, a nephrology laboratory (Level I laboratory), and a famous TCM doctor inheritance studio. The department focuses on the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease and follows the treatment principles of preventing disease before it occurs and preventing progression after disease develops. It has strengths in sequential integrated TCM and Western medicine treatment of chronic renal failure, especially combined disease-pattern and syndrome differentiation treatment in the early and middle stages. Its diagnostic and treatment scope includes sequential integrated treatment of chronic renal failure, treating both root and branch of chronic urinary tract infection, graded treatment of IgA nephropathy, and palliative treatment of cystic kidney diseases. By inheriting the academic experience of famous senior TCM doctors and combining it with clinical practice, the department makes full use of the advantages of TCM and has gradually developed and continuously optimized a series of diagnostic and treatment protocols for chronic kidney diseases treated with integrated TCM and Western medicine, forming its own distinctive features.
The Department of Nephrology has 15 established physicians and an academically strong team with a balanced professional structure and both integrity and ability, led by young and middle-aged clinicians.
