Yueyang Hospital’s Department of Rheumatology is a key specialty of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and a doctoral degree-awarding site of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its distinctive diagnostic and treatment features are “individualized treatment of arthritis integrating Chinese and Western medicine, treatment of Sjögren syndrome with traditional Chinese medicine, and reduction of the side effects of hormones with traditional Chinese medicine.” It specializes in the integrated Chinese-Western medicine diagnosis and treatment of various rheumatic diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, gouty arthritis, osteoarthritis, Sjögren syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, scleroderma, systemic vasculitis, Behçet disease, relapsing polychondritis, adult Still disease, IgG4-related disease, autoimmune liver disease, immune-related interstitial lung disease, and other rheumatic diseases.

On the basis of clinical practice guiding research and research promoting clinical practice, it has published more than 100 scientific research papers, successively undertaken 6 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, and undertaken more than 20 bureau-level and above research projects, including those of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology and other organizations. It has achieved significant results in areas including mechanism research on the integrated Chinese-Western medicine treatment of diseases such as Sjögren syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, myositis, and interstitial pneumonia.
