The department admits nearly 2,000 patients annually and performs nearly 1,000 operations.
The department undertakes basic and clinical application research, surgical treatment, teaching, and scientific research tasks for diseases such as those of the liver, biliary tract, pancreas, spleen, and portal hypertension (cirrhosis). The discipline’s philosophy is: seeking truth from facts, scientific development,, integration of Chinese and Western medicine, and harmonious sharing. It has achieved excellent results in clinical care, scientific research, teaching, and other areas, and has repeatedly been named an “Advanced Department” and an “Advanced Collective” by Yueyang Hospital. At present, the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery has one holder of a full senior professional title, two of associate senior titles, and three attending physicians. Among them are one doctoral supervisor and one master’s supervisor; two hold doctoral degrees and six hold master’s degrees. The academic team has a reasonable structure, is full of vitality, possesses strong technical capabilities, and has a strong academic atmosphere. The clinical and basic experimental research undertaken includes: the integrated Chinese and Western medicine diagnosis and treatment of acute pancreatitis; the clinical application of PD-1 in liver cancer: an experimental study of combined Chinese herbal medicine and gene therapy for liver cancer; and a clinical study of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of cirrhosis. In the past two years, Professor Cheng Shuqun of Shanghai Eastern Hepatobiliary Hospital has been specially appointed director of our hospital’s Cancer Center. Under his guidance, applying the concepts of MDT and ERAS, the department has coordinated development with sister departments such as Medical Oncology, Interventional Medicine, Gastroenterology, Acupuncture and Moxibustion, and Rehabilitation, jointly providing patients with the best medical services. Major breakthroughs have been achieved in treatment options and postoperative rehabilitation for primary and metastatic tumors of the liver, biliary tract, and pancreas.
Academically, our department emphasizes combining theory with clinical practice, traditional Chinese medicine with Western medicine, and tradition with modernity. Several major scientific research projects of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Yueyang Hospital have been completed or are currently under way.
