The First Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Center originated from the Department of Traumatology of the Fifth Outpatient Clinic for Publicly Funded Medical Care, established in 1952. Famous Shanghai orthopedic experts Professors Shi Xiaoshan and Shi Youshan provided consultations there. The department specialized in treating orthopedic and traumatological diseases through integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine therapies, such as internal treatment and external application: internal treatment employed ancestral formulas and medicines, with emphasis on holistic syndrome differentiation; external treatment employed methods such as splints, Three-Color Poultice Medicine, Zhongbu Plaster, and Black Tiger Pill. To meet the rapidly increasing demand for treatment among patients with orthopedic and traumatological conditions, the hospital established an inpatient ward for orthopedics and traumatology in 1976, carrying out surgical treatment for diseases including fractures of the extremities and spine, bone tumors, and bone tuberculosis. In 1995, the hospital moved to Dabaishu, Hongkou District, and the scale of its medical services rapidly expanded. The numbers of outpatient, emergency, and inpatient visits in orthopedics and traumatology increased year by year, and the spectrum of diseases treated continued to broaden. Since the beginning of the new century, particularly after the further subdivision of subspecialties in 2019, under the leadership of academic leader Director Tang Weizhong, the department has consistently adhered to the direction of “integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine,” continuously improved modern medical diagnostic and treatment methods, and actively carried out surgical treatment and other medical projects for diseases including traumatic fractures of the extremities and spine, spinal intervertebral disc and spinal canal lesions, correction of bone diseases, bone tuberculosis, and bone tumors, as well as arthroscopic minimally invasive surgery and artificial joint replacement, continuously improving the department’s academic level.
At present, the department has 33 authorized beds and 10 clinical physicians, including 4 with senior professional titles and 5 with intermediate professional titles; 3 personnel hold doctoral degrees. It has now formed an academic team combining senior, middle-aged, and young members; integrating traditional Chinese and Western medicine; integrating medical care, education, and research; and possessing strong innovation capabilities. The department has 2 supervisors qualified to guide master’s students, and in recent years has trained more than 10 master’s students. In recent years, it has been awarded 2 national-level research projects and more than 10 municipal bureau-level research projects, and dozens of core-journal and SCI papers have been published with the department as the first-author affiliation or corresponding-author affiliation.
