Geriatric Medicine
The Department of Geriatric Medicine/General Medicine is one of the earlier departments in China to undertake clinical geriatric medicine. With a focus on geriatric healthcare, it operates a specialized outpatient clinic for older adults, which serves more than 35,000 outpatient visits annually. The department has 68 beds and admits more than 1,500 patients annually, most of whom are over 70 years old. It has approximately 70 medical and nursing staff members. All physicians hold at least master's or doctoral degrees, including 5 chief physicians and 7 associate chief physicians.
The department has strong technical capabilities and extensive experience in clinical geriatric medicine. It maintains a high level of expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of common and frequently occurring diseases in older adults, difficult and severe diseases, multiple-organ dysfunction, and the rational use of medications by older adults. It has notable strengths in diagnosing difficult internal medicine conditions and providing emergency treatment for critically ill patients. The department is equipped with central monitoring systems, telemetry electrocardiographic monitoring, cardiac color Doppler ultrasonography, Holter monitoring, arterial stiffness testing equipment, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring devices, enabling it to provide older patients with priority diagnosis and high-quality services.
The department is a standardized residency training base in Beijing and an accredited training site for master's degrees in geriatric medicine. In recent years, it has participated in publishing several medical monographs, including the Guidelines for Geriatric Health Services in China, Expert Guidance on Geriatric Healthcare, and Rational Medication Use for Older Adults. It undertakes multiple research projects on geriatric diseases funded by the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and the Beijing Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission. Its main research areas include cardiovascular diseases in older adults; respiratory and infectious diseases in older adults; endocrine and metabolic diseases in older adults; and multiple-organ failure in older adults.
