The Department of Stomatology was one of the first departments established when Xuanwu Hospital was founded in 1958; with the passage of time, as the department continued to expand in scale, the oral specialties also continued to become more specialized; it is a standing committee member institution of the Beijing Stomatological Association, a doctoral postgraduate training site of Capital Medical University, a deputy-director institution of the Department of Stomatology of Capital Medical University, and a national- and Beijing-level specialty for the standardized training of general dentistry residents. The Department of Stomatology currently has three independent diagnostic and treatment areas, namely, the hospital headquarters, Dental Unit II, and the Special Needs and Cadre Health Care Department; it has 35 comprehensive dental treatment units and three specialized operating rooms. The oral specialties are fully established (including the specialty of dental hard-tissue and pulp diseases, the specialty of periodontal diseases, the specialty of pediatric dental diseases, the specialty of oral mucosal diseases, the specialty of oral prevention, the specialty of alveolar surgery, the specialty of orthodontics, the specialty of prosthodontics, the specialty of oral implantology, and the specialty of oral and maxillofacial imaging). Each independent diagnostic and treatment area is equipped with internationally and domestically advanced clinical diagnostic and treatment equipment, including imported comprehensive treatment units, three-dimensional cone-beam CT systems, digital dental radiography units, full-wavelength oral laser therapy devices, dental microscopes, periodontal endoscopes, digital periodontal electronic probing systems, digital analysis systems for stomatognathic function, intraoral digital scanners, CAD/CAM milling systems, dedicated oral 3D printers, digital nitrous oxide devices, and a complete set of professional oral sterilization equipment, among others. In its diagnostic and treatment work, the Department is committed to applying modern high-tech diagnostic and treatment technologies in clinical practice to relieve patients’ pain and improve oral-system function and facial aesthetic management. Routine services include microscopic dental hard-tissue treatment, minimally invasive tooth extraction and ECG-monitored tooth extraction, systematic treatment of periodontal disease (including combined periodontal-orthodontic treatment for adults), treatment of pediatric dental diseases, implant restoration and aesthetic restoration, early orthodontic correction for children, adult clear-aligner treatment, and more; in addition, distinctive diagnostic and treatment technologies such as minimally invasive dental laser treatment, painless nitrous oxide treatment, implant anchorage techniques, and treatment of sleep apnea syndrome with an anti-snoring device are applied in daily care. At present, the Department integrates medical care, education, research, and prevention; it trains and recruits talent from China and abroad, has received support from talent programs including Beijing Special Talents, Outstanding Talents and Young Talents of the Organization Department of the Municipal Party Committee, the Ten-Hundred-Thousand Talent program of the Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission, and the 215 Talent program, and has established an excellent academic team combining specialist physicians and scientific researchers. On the one hand, it continuously improves the level of clinical diagnosis and treatment in stomatology and optimizes oral diagnostic and treatment processes, providing patients with treatment that is both professional and warm-hearted; on the other hand, it continuously deepens clinical research, exploring oral diseases, treatment mechanisms, and their relationships with systemic diseases, thereby improving the level of scientific research. Over the past ten years, it has undertaken more than 20 research projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Young Project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, the joint key project of the Municipal Education Commission and the Municipal Natural Science Foundation, the Independent Innovation and Youth projects of the Capital Medical Development Special Program, the Capital Characteristic Fund, and others.
