Cardiac Surgery

Xuanwu Hospital’s Department of Cardiac Surgery is one of the centers in China for the treatment of cardiac surgical diseases that were established relatively early. Under the leadership of professors of the older generation, including Dong Zongjun, Le Xiaohui, and Zhang Jian, it was already performing highly complex operations such as heart transplantation in the 1980s. After nearly 40 years of development, Xuanwu Hospital’s Department of Cardiac Surgery has now developed into a department capable of performing all routine cardiac surgery procedures and holds a certain academic standing among its peers in China. At the same time, as Beijing’s Center for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Geriatric Diseases, Xuanwu Hospital has, in response to the characteristics of cardiovascular diseases in older adults, performed surgical treatment for myocardial ischemia complicated by cerebrovascular disease and renal impairment, all of which achieved good therapeutic results. In the surgical treatment of heart failure, intra-aortic balloon pump and left ventricular assist (ECMO) therapy have been introduced in recent years, and the department has gradually developed its own distinctive features in the surgical treatment of coronary artery disease and atrial fibrillation.

In the surgical treatment of coronary artery disease, off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting, minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting, hybrid surgery combining minimally invasive bypass grafting + coronary stenting technology, hybrid surgery combining coronary artery bypass grafting + carotid artery stenting or endarterectomy, and total arterial coronary artery bypass grafting can be routinely performed. In particular, considerable clinical experience has been accumulated in the surgical treatment of coronary artery disease complicated by severe intracranial ischemia, resulting in comprehensive coverage of the field of coronary artery disease treatment.

In the surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation, minimally invasive epicardial radiofrequency ablation and left atrial appendage clipping are routinely performed, achieving a higher rate of conversion from atrial fibrillation and the maximum possible prevention of cardioembolic stroke.
