Emergency Department
The Department of Emergency Medicine of Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, originated from the “Emergency Room” established when the hospital was founded in 1958. After more than 60 years of development, especially the rapid progress of the past more than 20 years, it has formed a comprehensive emergency-medicine system integrating medical care, education, and research, with complete functional areas and distinctive subspecialties. Each year it diagnoses and treats more than 200,000 emergency and critically ill patients, receives more than 13,000 ambulance visits, rescues more than 7,000 critically ill patients, and undertakes medical support for major events and disaster-relief missions. It has emergency consultation rooms, resuscitation rooms, observation rooms, infusion rooms, an emergency ward, and an emergency ICU. It also has dedicated emergency pharmacy, laboratory, ultrasound, CT, MIR, DSA, and other facilities capable of providing round-the-clock, 24-hour services.
The department currently has 157 medical and nursing staff, including 1 doctoral supervisor, 4 master’s supervisors, 6 chief physicians, and 15 professionals with associate-senior titles; 9 doctors, 23 master’s degree holders, and 5 bachelor’s degree holders; and 25 emergency specialty nurses. The nursing team includes 3 postgraduate degree holders, 53 bachelor’s degree holders, 4 deputy chief nurses, and 14 charge nurses. The department specializes in comprehensive treatment of neurological, geriatric, and critically ill patients. Its four major green channels—for stroke, chest pain, multiple trauma, and rescue of high-risk pregnant women and puerperae—are well established. It is the National Quality Control Center for the stroke green channel. It is proficient in advanced technologies and equipment including mechanical ventilation, bedside hemofiltration, hemoperfusion, hemodynamic monitoring, critical-care ultrasound, intravascular hypothermia, and ECMO for rescuing and treating patients with various emergency and critical conditions.
As the First Clinical College of Capital Medical University, the department values the transmission of teaching traditions and the training and development of faculty, and has established a standardized and rigorous teaching system. It undertakes teaching and clinical supervision for students in long-term programs and undergraduate students of Capital Medical University. It is a Beijing standardized training base for emergency-medicine residents, a U.S. AHA cardiopulmonary-resuscitation training base, a teaching base for emergency specialty nurses of the Chinese Association of Emergency Medicine, a Beijing teaching base for emergency specialty nurses, and a teaching base for nutrition specialty nurses of the Chinese Nutrition Association. It was among the first in China to conduct high-fidelity simulation teaching and training. Each year it holds multiple national and Beijing continuing-education courses; comprehensive high-fidelity simulation training has become a distinctive program and brand.
Over the past 5 years, it has undertaken more than 30 projects at various levels, including projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, Shoufa, and key projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology. It has published more than 110 papers in statistical-source journals and 23 SCI papers; the highest impact factor of a single paper was 13.22. It has been editor-in-chief or co-editor of more than 10 monographs and scholarly works.
The department emphasizes departmental culture. The volunteer team “Angels by Your Side”—a public-welfare volunteer initiative for first-aid skills—has visited schools, government agencies, enterprises, rural areas, and communities throughout Beijing, training thousands of people in cardiopulmonary-resuscitation skills. Outstanding individuals have emerged, including recipients of the Beijing March 8 Red-Banner Medal, Beijing Role Models, and Beijing Advanced Individuals in epidemic prevention and control. In 2019, the department received the title of National March 8 Red-Banner Collective; in 2021, it received the honorary title of Youth Civilization Unit from the Communist Youth League.
The department will uphold the Xuanwu medical spirit of “integrity, diligence, rigor, and excellence,” continuously improve medical quality, optimize diagnostic and treatment processes, and improve medical services, developing into a high-quality emergency department with high-level medical care, depth in teaching and research, and warmth in serving patients.
