Haematology
The Department of Hematology of Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, originated from the Hematology Specialty Group established within the Department of Internal Medicine in 1960. The Department of Hematology was formally established in 1980 and began undertaking the teaching responsibilities of Capital Medical University in 1983. It is a training site for master’s and doctoral students of Capital Medical University, a deputy-director unit of the Department of Hematology at Capital Medical University, and the principal examination institution for the second-stage resident physician examination in hematology in the Beijing area.
In 1991, the Department of Hematology performed the first autologous bone marrow transplantation, and in 1996 it performed the first allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In 2006, it was approved as a doctoral graduate training site, and in 2008 it was approved as a drug clinical trial base.
The Department of Hematology consists of four functional units: the hematology outpatient clinic, general ward, transplant ward, and hematology laboratory. The hematology outpatient clinic and wards provide year-round consultations and admissions for patients with various common, rare, complex, and critical diseases of the hematologic system. All subspecialties are fully represented, and the department routinely provides chemotherapy, immunotherapy, including CAR-T cell therapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and other services. It can complete the entire course of treatment for patients with hematologic diseases. The team has extensive clinical experience, advanced treatment concepts, and relatively large disease cohorts. The hematology laboratory can perform high-quality cell morphology, immunology, cytogenetics, and molecular biology testing, supporting precision diagnosis and evaluation of treatment efficacy. In recent years, drawing on the strengths of the National Medical Center for Neurological Diseases at Xuanwu Hospital and the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases, the department has gradually developed distinctive expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of central nervous system lymphoma, POEMS syndrome, myeloproliferative neoplasms, bone marrow failure diseases, myeloid neoplasms in older adults, neuro-oncology, and other diseases.
In education, the Department of Hematology has achieved outstanding results and received numerous awards. For many years, it has undertaken numerous teaching responsibilities, including teaching for the Jieping Class, the 5+3 long-duration program, international students, and graduate students, as well as supervising resident physicians, general practitioners, and others. It is also responsible for one Jieping Class course and one graduate course. The Department of Hematology is also the principal examination institution for the second-stage resident physician examination in hematology in the Beijing area.
Department personnel serve as principal investigators for numerous research projects, including those of the National Natural Science Foundation, the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, and the Capital Health Development Research Special Project.
