Urology

Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University established its urology specialty in 1977 and its inpatient ward in 1983. Professors Dong Zongjun and Sun Yucheng successively served as department directors, and senior experts such as Luo Weiyuan, Ding Qian, Li Shihua, Wang Zubin, and Wang Jian emerged. It currently has 13 physicians, 15 nurses, and 30 beds. The current department director is Professor Ou Tongwen, and the department has experts such as Xu Jianjun, Li Jin, Cui Xin, Chen Xiaosong, and Gao Wei. It is a training base for master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral students in urology at Capital Medical University.

In addition to the general urology outpatient clinic, our department also has specialty outpatient clinics for urinary system tumors, stones, neurogenic bladder, urinary control, and andrology. At present, the annual outpatient volume exceeds 40,000, there are more than 2,300 inpatients, and more than 2,200 operations are performed. It has laparoscopic surgical equipment, flexible and rigid ureteroscopes, a percutaneous nephroscope, intraoperative ultrasound, a 120W thulium laser, and a holmium laser, among others. At present, our department widely performs laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery for renal cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, ureteral cancer, and other cancers; performs radioactive seed implantation for the treatment of prostate cancer; performs extracorporeal lithotripsy, ureteroscopic and percutaneous nephroscopic laser lithotripsy, and other procedures to treat urinary system tumors; performs laser treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia and bladder tumors; performs transvaginal tension-free mid-urethral sling procedures to treat stress urinary incontinence; and performs bladder-wall injections of botulinum toxin, “bladder pacemaker” (sacral neuromodulation), and bowel bladder augmentation to treat neurogenic bladder. The Department of Urology of Xuanwu Hospital has reached an advanced level in China in the diagnosis and treatment of urinary system tumors, stones, and neurogenic bladder, and has become a center for the diagnosis and treatment of urological diseases integrating medical care, education, and research.

Imaging Urodynamics Center

The center is staffed by one physician and one technician and has a Laborie urodynamic system and a Siemens X-ray examination table for the diagnosis of neurogenic bladder, benign prostatic hyperplasia, stress urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, and various types of urinary retention.

Extracorporeal Lithotripsy Center

The extracorporeal lithotripsy room of the Department of Urology of Xuanwu Hospital was established in July 1997 and has a history of more than 20 years. It currently performs more than 1,300 extracorporeal lithotripsy procedures annually. It has a Semi-Integrated Lithotripter Dornier Delta® III extracorporeal lithotripter manufactured by the German company Dornier and a Dornier FS-2000 X-ray positioning system, and is at an internationally advanced level.

Cystoscopy Center

At present, the cystoscopy room of our department is staffed by two specialized personnel and performs routine cystoscopy, painless cystoscopy, ureteral stent insertion/removal, retrograde urography, and other procedures.
