Neurosurgery Department I
Neurosurgery was established in 1956; in 2006, Neurosurgery Department I was established as a brain tumor ward. It currently has 62 beds, admits more than 3,000 patient cases annually, and performs more than 1,500 surgeries annually. The department has strong technical expertise and teaching capacity, with 15 physicians, including 6 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, and 6 attending and resident physicians. It has 1 doctoral supervisor and 8 master’s supervisors, as well as 6 PhD holders and 9 master’s degree holders. It currently has 18 nursing staff, including 5 supervising nurses, 10 nurse practitioners, and 3 nurses. It has led and participated in numerous National Natural Science Foundation projects and autonomous-region-level research projects, and has published more than 100 papers in domestic and international journals. The department is the “Ministry of Health Endoscopy Training Base,” “Chinese Medical Doctor Association Neuroendoscopy Physician Training Base,” “Vice-Chair Institution of the Northwest Pituitary Tumor Specialty Alliance,” “China Neurosurgery Specialist Standardized Training Base,” “Pituitary Disease Multidisciplinary (MDT) Diagnosis and Treatment Center of the Chinese Pituitary Tumor Collaboration Group,” “Member Institution of the China Neurosurgery Alliance,” “Council Member Institution of the Brain Glioma MDT Alliance of the National Medical Center for Neurological Diseases,” “Xinjiang Neurosurgery Quality Control Center,” and “Key Specialty of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.” Scope of diagnosis and treatment: meningiomas, gliomas, pituitary tumors, acoustic neuromas, craniopharyngiomas, pineal-region tumors, intraventricular tumors, chordomas and various skull-base tumors, cerebral hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, cranioplasty, Chiari malformations, and others. Brain tumor surgery in the brain tumor ward is leading in Northwest China and is well known nationwide. At present, the department is divided into three subspecialty groups, as follows: 1. Midline Tumor Group: It specializes in resection of gliomas/meningiomas/pineal-region tumors under multimodal systems such as intraoperative neuronavigation, intraoperative ultrasonography, and fluorescence microscopy. Resection of gliomas in functional brain areas using multimodal systems was the first glioma-resection application performed by our center throughout Xinjiang. Under awake anesthesia, the combination of fluorescence microscopy and multimodal neuroimaging navigation technology preserves patients’ functions to a greater extent and improves their prognosis. 2. Sellar Region Tumor Group: It specializes in minimally invasive transsphenoidal resection of pituitary tumors/craniopharyngiomas/tuberculum sellae meningiomas/skull-base tumors using microscopes and endoscopes. It was among the first institutions nationwide to introduce and use neuroendoscopic technology, pioneered its implementation in Xinjiang, and is a leader in Northwest China. In China, it was the first to perform one-stage endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal resection of a pituitary tumor combined with a giant olfactory groove meningioma. 3. Posterior Cranial Fossa Tumor Group: It specializes in microscopic resection of posterior fossa tumors such as acoustic neuromas, as well as supratentorial convexity meningiomas, lobar gliomas, and other tumors. It was the first in Northwest China to perform acoustic neuroma resection under neurophysiological monitoring and the first in Xinjiang to perform endoscopic CPA tumor resection. It effectively uses advanced technical equipment such as intraoperative neuronavigation, intraoperative ultrasonography, intraoperative CT, and fluorescence microscopy to improve patients’ prognosis.
