Nephrology Department II
The Department of Nephrology was established in 1980. Through four decades of unremitting efforts by three generations, it has grown into the largest kidney disease centre in Xinjiang with the strongest comprehensive medical capacity. The centre was formally established in 2019 and comprises Nephrology Department I, Nephrology Department II, Nephrology Department III and the Haemodialysis Department. It is the Xinjiang Branch of the National Clinical Research Centre for Kidney Diseases, the institution to which the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Institute of Nephrology is affiliated, a Ministry of Health clinical trial base for nephrology drugs, and a Ministry of Health demonstration centre for peritoneal dialysis.
Nephrology Department II currently has 35 beds and provides high-quality diagnostic and treatment services to patients of all ethnic groups. It has extensive clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of common, complex and critical kidney diseases, with particular strengths in glomerular diseases, peritoneal dialysis and acute and chronic kidney disease. More than 400 kidney biopsies are performed each year, a number that rises annually and ranks first in Xinjiang; the diagnosis and treatment of primary and secondary glomerular diseases has improved rapidly. As the earliest team in Xinjiang to carry out peritoneal dialysis, after years of development and the introduction of new techniques and services, a large number of patients have undergone peritoneal dialysis catheter placement and receive long-term follow-up in the department, a scale that leads within the region. The team has also developed a specialised, high-quality nursing team with rich experience in the care of various kidney diseases and related procedures.
The team actively conducts clinical and basic research. It has undertaken 2 national-level projects, 5 regional-level projects and 1 special clinical research project of the Chinese Medical Association; it has received 1 third prize for scientific and technological progress from the autonomous region, 1 second prize of the Xinjiang Medical Science and Technology Award, 1 invention patent and 1 patent conversion project; it has published more than 40 papers at home and abroad, including 4 SCI papers, and compiled 2 monographs. It has participated in more than ten high-quality international and domestic multicentre drug clinical studies, with more than 20 projects awaiting launch, ranking first in Xinjiang in both quality and scale.
The department has built a talent echelon of young and middle-aged physicians led by Professor Lu Chen as discipline leader, including 3 PhD holders, 1 doctoral candidate and 5 master's degree holders. Over the years it has trained and supplied a large number of outstanding postgraduate students, resident trainees and visiting physicians within and beyond Xinjiang, and is the main institution in Xinjiang for training doctoral and master's-level talent in nephrology. Under Professor Lu Chen's leadership, the team has achieved pioneering progress across multiple platforms, disciplines and interdisciplinary fields, and its comprehensive strength has been further enhanced. The department will continue to provide high-quality care to patients and contribute to the health cause of Xinjiang.
