Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine Ward 1 (Pulmonary Diseases Department 1)
Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region
In 1989, the Respiratory Department was established with 16 beds; in 2003, the Respiratory Department became an independent department with 37 beds, and a bronchoscopy room and a pulmonary function room were set up; in 2010, the Respiratory Department was divided into three departments — the First Respiratory Department, the Second Respiratory Department and the Respiratory ICU — and moved to the 10th/11th floors of the Internal Medicine Building, with a total of 90 beds, becoming a national respiratory disease research base; in 2014, the Respiratory Department moved to the Research Building and was divided into four departments according to subspecialty direction: the First Respiratory Department, the Second Respiratory Department, the Third Respiratory Department and the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit, and the Respiratory Endoscopy Interventional Center and the Respiratory Disease Research Laboratory (a key laboratory of the Autonomous Region) were established. The Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine of the Affiliated Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University (the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region) is a national TCM clinical research base for COPD, a key specialty of the National Health Commission, a regional diagnostic and treatment center of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a key discipline of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a specialty department of a national new-drug clinical trial institution, and the lead unit for COPD in the national pilot project of integrated Chinese-Western medicine clinical collaboration on major and difficult diseases, as well as the undertaking unit of the Xinjiang Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease Research and of the Xinjiang innovative team for the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases with traditional Chinese medicine; it is also the training department for master's and doctoral students in the integrated Chinese-Western medicine respiratory specialty of Xinjiang Medical University. The department currently has 45 physicians and clinical researchers, including 8 chief physicians (of whom 2 are professors and 4 are associate professors) and 7 associate chief physicians (of whom 1 is an associate researcher and 1 is a senior laboratory technician); 8 hold doctoral degrees and more than 20 hold master's degrees; 2 are doctoral supervisors and 9 are master's supervisors; 1 expert enjoys the State Council special allowance; 1 is an outstanding expert of the Autonomous Region with outstanding contributions. There are currently 207 approved beds; more than 11,000 patients are admitted annually and more than 50,000 outpatient visits are made per year. Integrating medical care, teaching, research, rehabilitation, preventive healthcare and many other functions, it is one of the largest respiratory and critical care medicine departments in Xinjiang at present. The department consists of the First, Second and Third Wards of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit, the outpatient clinic, the pulmonary function room, the respiratory endoscopy and interventional treatment room, etc.; apart from the diagnosis and treatment of COPD, asthma and pneumonia, each ward has its own specialized focus: the First Ward focuses on lung tumors, the Second Ward on pulmonary vascular diseases and pulmonary infectious diseases, and the Third Ward on interstitial lung diseases and sleep-related breathing disorders. The First Ward of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (the First Lung Disease Department) mainly admits space-occupying diseases of the respiratory system such as lung tumors, pulmonary nodules and mediastinal masses; it is especially adept at the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of small pulmonary nodules, and at the early screening, early diagnosis and early treatment of lung cancer, and has rich experience in the whole-course integrated Chinese-Western medical diagnosis, treatment and management of lung cancer. Our department completes more than 600 percutaneous lung needle biopsies each year, with a high diagnostic confirmation rate; the procedure has advantages such as minimal trauma, strong operability, short time consumption and few intraoperative and postoperative complications, and provides the basis for the diagnosis of pulmonary nodules. At the same time, many respiratory interventional techniques have been carried out, such as: •1. Conventional electronic bronchoscopy (more than 20 endoscopes, including ultra-fine, conventional, therapeutic and fluorescence scopes). •2. Ultrasound bronchoscopy: EBUS-TBNA, EBUS-GS. •3. Flexible medical thoracoscopy technique. •4. CT-guided percutaneous lung tissue biopsy (500–700 cases per year). •5. CT-guided percutaneous mediastinal mass biopsy (anterior, posterior). •6. Ultrasound-guided pleural biopsy. •7. Benign tracheal-bronchial stenosis: laser, high-pressure balloon dilation, cryotherapy, high-frequency electrocautery needle and other treatments. •8. Malignant tracheal-bronchial lesions: high-frequency electro-knife, argon knife, cryotherapy, stent implantation, etc. •9. Tracheo-esophageal fistula: covered stent and silicone stent implantation. •10. Refractory asthma: bronchial thermoplasty. •11. Right heart catheterization and pulmonary angiography. •12. Bronchial arteriography and bronchial artery embolization.
