Microsurgical Repair and Reconstructive Surgery Department
Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region
The Microsurgical Repair and Reconstructive Surgery Department specializes in treating various major-extremity and hand traumas, including vascular and nerve injuries, skin defects, peripheral nerve injuries, complex fractures or dislocations of the hand and wrist, and fracture fixation of the extremities. It was the first in the northwest region to perform surgical treatments such as talar lengthening for calcaneal defects, free fibular transplantation for femoral head necrosis, primary distraction treatment of composite tissue defects of the extremities using the Ilizarov technique, combined treatment of chronic wounds using multiple approaches, transverse tibial bone transport combined with Dellon triple nerve decompression for diabetic foot, transverse tibial bone transport combined with PRP technology for diabetic foot, and computer-assisted treatment of limb deformities, achieving good therapeutic results. The department actively participates in the treatment of casualties from emergency public health events in the autonomous region and was awarded the title of Autonomous Region Youth Civilization Unit. It has completed more than 500 cases of replantation of severed fingers (toes), palms, and limbs, with a survival rate as high as 92% or above. In 2021, we successfully treated a boy from Hotan with an amputated arm. From admission through surgery, the team members cooperated actively and reconnected the blood vessels of the severed limb within the extremely limited time, successfully completing the operation. After comprehensive rehabilitation treatment, the child recovered good limb function after surgery and gradually returned to normal life. In chronic wound repair, we use surgical dressing changes and surgical repair, combined with negative-pressure suction technology, PRP technology, computer-assisted technology, and other approaches to treat chronic wounds, curing a large number of patients. We established the first physician-led chronic wound clinic in Xinjiang and, in 2019, were recognized as Xinjiang’s first China Wound Repair Specialty Training Center. In peripheral nerve injury repair, through our collaboration with the Hand Surgery Department of Shanghai Huashan Hospital, we have begun training personnel in peripheral nerve injury repair at our institution and have performed high-difficulty peripheral nerve injury repair procedures, including intercostal nerve transfer, contralateral C7 nerve transfer, and phrenic nerve transfer, among others. With the assistance of the hospital’s Rehabilitation Department, we have achieved good functional recovery. The department has accumulated extensive clinical experience and actively develops and promotes the application of traditional Chinese medicine techniques in disease rehabilitation, combining modern rehabilitation concepts with traditional medical techniques. The department’s team has published more than 20 papers, applied for 5 utility model patents, completed one hospital-level project and one department- or bureau-level project, and currently has two provincial- or ministerial-level projects under study. At the same time, we actively participate in public welfare initiatives. In 2018 and 2019, we held the “Thumb Project” free surgery public welfare activities at our hospital for two consecutive years, enabling a total of 46 children with congenital deformities from remote areas of Xinjiang to receive consultations and surgical treatment free of charge from top national experts without leaving Xinjiang.
