Cancer Centre
With the strong support of the hospital and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Gynecologic Oncology Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Ward of West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan University was officially established in June 2006, with only 15 beds at that time. Under the leadership of Professor Yin Rutie, an expert in gynecologic oncology, and with the care and assistance of the gynecology specialty group and faculty members from related disciplines, as well as the joint efforts of all medical staff, the ward started from nothing, established regulations and built its practice, and worked diligently to advance; it has provided patients with chemotherapy through multiple routes, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, actively explored precision diagnosis and treatment, worked hard to advance the development of a gynecologic oncology prevention and control system, expanded the specialized nursing service system, strengthened comprehensive treatment for cancer pain, patient nutrition, thrombosis prevention, and psychological counseling, and expanded both the breadth and length of patients’ lives. Over the past nearly 10 years, as tumor incidence has increased, with the support of the hospital leadership and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the ward expanded by 33 beds despite the extremely limited space of our hospital, the average annual number of patients treated exceeded 5,000 patient-visits, critically ill patients were rescued more than 760 times per year, and more than 1,400 consultations for difficult cases were conducted annually. The ward has also been actively committed to cultivating specialized personnel in gynecologic oncology chemotherapy, promoting the continuous development and expansion of the professional talent echelon, carrying out health education for gynecologic oncology patients for many consecutive years, providing free medical consultations at primary-level hospitals, giving specialized lectures, helping impoverished patients apply for charitable assistance funds, and visiting impoverished patients; it has continuously expanded academic exchange, improved the professional knowledge and skills of medical personnel, and promoted the vertical connectivity of high-quality regional resources. Since 2008, it has led the conduct of international and domestic multicenter clinical trials and investigator-initiated clinical research. In addition, it took the lead in China in conducting and promoting platinum skin testing and desensitization therapy, ovarian protection during chemotherapy, the application of recombinant human P53 adenovirus in patients with advanced and drug-resistant recurrent gynecologic malignant tumors, and thrombosis risk assessment and prevention in gynecologic oncology patients, filling multiple technical gaps in China and Sichuan. It has undertaken a number of national-level, ministry- and provincial-level scientific research projects and Chengdu Huimin projects, published many SCI papers, obtained multiple patents, and hosted high-level academic conferences for many consecutive years, leading the development of gynecologic oncology chemotherapy and multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment throughout the province and receiving broad recognition and high praise from the professional community. On December 11, 2017, on the basis of the continuous development of the Gynecologic Oncology Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Ward, the farsighted hospital leadership established the Department of Gynecologic Oncology Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy to further promote the development of the discipline. The department currently has 29 medical staff members (not including physicists, technicians, and radiation oncologists who have not yet formally taken up their posts), 1 supervising professor, 1 professor, 3 associate professors, and 4 attending physicians. All department personnel at the level of attending physician or above have doctoral or master’s degrees and possess extensive theoretical knowledge, clinical practice experience, and a sound foundation in scientific research, laying a solid foundation for the department’s future development. In the Jinjiang New Hospital Campus, to which the department will soon relocate, the department’s space will be greatly improved and the number of beds will increase to more than 70. Radiotherapy, hyperthermia, immunobiotherapy, interventional therapy, and other tumor treatment methods will be introduced successively, and it is believed that specialized gynecologic oncology treatment featuring individualized comprehensive treatment will contribute to improving treatment efficacy and patients’ survival time and quality of life. A scholar must be broad-minded and resolute; the burden is heavy and the road is long! With the care and assistance of the hospital leadership and all colleagues, this young team in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy will unite and forge ahead, seek truth and pursue practical work, stay true to its original aspiration, remember its mission, and pour our sweat and wisdom into the development of gynecologic oncology in our province and throughout the country!
