General Dentistry

The General Dentistry Department of Tongji University Dental Hospital is one of the earliest clinical departments established in China with undergraduate clinical internships as its primary focus. Its scope of diagnosis and treatment covers endodontics, prosthodontics, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. In endodontics, it provides diagnosis and treatment for dental caries, pulp diseases, and periapical diseases; aesthetic restoration of anterior tooth defects; warm gutta-percha root canal filling; and apical surgery. In oral and maxillofacial surgery, it provides complex tooth extraction, minimally invasive tooth extraction, and minor alveolar surgery. In prosthodontics, it provides conventional fixed and removable denture restoration, with particular expertise in difficult complete denture restoration and aesthetic dental restoration. The department is equipped with comprehensive treatment facilities, including dental microscopes, nickel-titanium root canal preparation systems, warm gutta-percha filling technology, and fiber post-and-core restoration techniques. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, it develops optimal individualized treatment plans and provides high-level diagnostic and treatment services to a broad range of patients.

The department undertakes clinical internships for five-year undergraduate students. It has always adhered to the integration of teaching and clinical practice, providing students with comprehensive training in clinical skills, professional ethics, and professional spirit, and has received full recognition and unanimous acclaim from peers in the profession and the general public. It is currently a member institution of the Oral and Maxillofacial–Head and Neck Oncology Internal Medicine Group of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Professional Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association; a member institution of the Geriatric Dentistry Professional Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association; a member institution of the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Professional Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association; a member institution of the Temporomandibular Joint and Occlusion Professional Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association; a deputy-chair institution of the Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine Special Committee of the Shanghai Stomatological Association; a member institution of the Prosthodontics Professional Committee of the Shanghai Stomatological Association; a deputy-chair institution of the Dental Prosthetic Technology Professional Committee of the Shanghai Stomatological Association; a member institution of the Dental Materials Professional Committee of the Shanghai Stomatological Association; a member institution of the Oral and Maxillofacial–Head and Neck Oncology Special Committee of the Shanghai Stomatological Association; and a member institution of the General Dentistry Professional Committee of the Shanghai Stomatological Association. It has successively received such honors as the Tongji University Youth Civilization Unit, the Shanghai Youth Unit, and the Shanghai Model Collective.
