Dental Implantology
The Department of Oral Implantology of the Affiliated Stomatological Hospital of Tongji University is one of the earliest institutions in China to perform implant-supported restorative treatment. The department has a strong team of physicians, with senior-title personnel accounting for 75% and doctoral supervisors accounting for 25%; all department members hold doctoral degrees, and 50% hold doctoral degrees from overseas. Professor Wang Zuolin, the academic leader, is Chair of the 5th Oral Implantology Professional Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Expert Consensus on Dental Implant Restoration 2019, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the national undergraduate planning textbook Oral Implantology, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the national undergraduate planning textbook Question Bank for Oral Implantology, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the national standardized residency training planning textbook Stomatology: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and First Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Textbook for Specialists in Oral Implantology, among other positions.
In recent years, the discipline has achieved a series of groundbreaking research results in areas including osseointegration of implants, modification of implant materials, osteogenesis at the maxillary sinus floor, bone tissue metabolism, and hard-tissue development. It has successively received talent-related programs such as the National Excellent Young Scientists Program, the Shanghai Outstanding Academic Leader Program, and the Ministry of Education's New Century Talent Support Program. The department has undertaken numerous projects, including the Key Special Project for Strategic International Scientific and Technological Innovation Cooperation under the National Key Research and Development Program, the National Science and Technology Support Program during the 12th Five-Year Plan period, the General Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Doctoral Program Fund of the Ministry of Education, key projects of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology, Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Research Projects, and the Innovation Action Plan of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology. Each year, it publishes more than 10 high-quality SCI-indexed papers in top academic journals and other journals in the field of stomatology.
Led by Professor Wang Zuolin, the academic leader, the team was the first in China to report and implement the application of the piezosurgery device in transcrestal maxillary sinus floor elevation, the application of the lateral-window technique in lateral maxillary sinus floor elevation, and research on the relationship between the crown height of implant-supported prostheses and occlusal force. The team was also the first to apply PRP technology, CGF technology, and other techniques in implant clinical practice; it performs clinical diagnosis and treatment for complex cases, including immediate implant placement and restoration, esthetic restoration of anterior teeth, implant restoration for patients with insufficient bone volume, and immediate implant placement and immediate restoration of edentulous jaws with precise positioning guided by digital surgical templates. The relevant theoretical achievements have been widely applied by stomatology schools and medical institutions throughout China. In addition, the discipline undertakes the development of diagnostic and treatment standards for oral implantology, actively promotes technological innovation, and holds national continuing education courses and various domestic academic seminars every year. It has driven the development of oral implantology in Shanghai and East China and has received full recognition and high praise from professional peers and the general public of patients.
The department's main services are implant-supported restorative treatment for patients with dentition defects and edentulism. Its distinctive diagnostic and treatment technologies include:
1. Full-arch implant placement for edentulous jaws and immediate restoration, including the All-on-4 technique.
2. Lateral-window, minimally invasive maxillary sinus floor elevation with bone grafting
3. Onlay bone grafting in areas with insufficient horizontal and vertical bone volume
4. Immediate implant placement and immediate restoration in the esthetic zone of the anterior teeth
5. Intraoral digital scanning and 3D-printed implant surgical guides
