Periodontology Department 1
The First Department of Periodontology of the Stomatological Hospital Affiliated with Tongji University is one of the disciplines in China that, at a relatively early stage, established an independent department of periodontal disease and a teaching and research section in periodontology. It undertakes the hospital’s medical, teaching, and research tasks in periodontology, as well as clinical instruction for the standardized training of resident physicians and specialist physicians. All physicians in the department have received formal higher education and standardized training in specialized techniques and have extensive clinical experience.
The department’s diagnostic and treatment services cover sequential treatment for all types of periodontal disease, including routine dental cleaning, scaling and root planing, gingivectomy, flap debridement, bone grafting, mucogingival surgery, and more. It has certain distinctive features, particularly in research on periodontal tissue regeneration and the relationship between periodontal disease and systemic diseases such as coronary heart disease. As a basic discipline at the intersection of multiple disciplines, the department currently not only diagnoses and treats various periodontal diseases but also actively implements various new techniques and conducts joint diagnosis and treatment with other disciplines: in collaboration with prosthodontics, it performs esthetic crown lengthening to improve gingival asymmetry in the anterior teeth and gummy smiles; in collaboration with orthodontics, it conducts risk assessments before orthodontic treatment and the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease during and after treatment and, through autogenous keratinized gingival grafting, prevents and treats some cases of root-surface exposure; in collaboration with restorative dentistry and endodontics, it studies the etiology, treatment, and prevention of combined periodontal-endodontic lesions in order to preserve affected teeth. Many of these techniques have achieved good treatment outcomes and are highly praised by patients. The department’s academic team has a strong faculty and strong research capabilities, has obtained multiple grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and research projects from the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and is an institutional member of the Standing Committee of the Periodontology Professional Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association.
