Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery

The Department of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery of Tongji Hospital Affiliated with Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology was established in December 2006. Its academic leader, Professor Wu Yiping, is a second-level professor, chief physician, doctoral supervisor, Vice President of the Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeons Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Chair of the Plastic Surgery Branch of the Hubei Society of the Chinese Medical Association, Vice President of the Chinese Society of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and an editorial board member of the Chinese Journal of Medical Aesthetics and Cosmetology. Professor Wu Yiping also serves concurrently as Head of the Breast Group of the Medical Aesthetics and Cosmetology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and Head of the Breast Group of the Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeons Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. It is extremely rare nationwide for one person to concurrently head two specialty groups of such high standing. The department has now become a deputy-chair institution of the Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeons Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the chair institution of the Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery specialty in Hubei Province, a training base for plastic surgery specialists in Central China, a doctoral and master’s degree-granting site of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, a GCP drug clinical trial base, an important repair and treatment base for difficult and complicated plastic-surgery conditions, and a Breast Repair and Reconstruction Center (for breast cancer). The department has a total medical area of nearly 3000 square meters, located respectively in the Tongji Hankou Campus and the Tongji Optics Valley Campus. The research area is 200 square meters, and the department’s dedicated laboratory is located in the research building of the Tongji Sino-French New City Campus. The outpatient department of the Hankou Campus is located on the fifth floor of the Second Outpatient Department, and that of the Optics Valley Campus is located on the fifth floor of Area M1. The outpatient departments at both campuses have Breast Customized Repair and Reconstruction Centers, specialist consultation rooms, medical aesthetic injection rooms, and VIP rooms; they also have a laser treatment center equipped with various advanced laser devices with a total value of more than ten million yuan, as well as 8 dedicated digital sterile laminar-flow operating rooms. The inpatient department is located on the second floor of Area A1 of the rapidly developing Optics Valley Campus, with 38 beds and 6 VIP rooms. The department currently has 16 senior medical, nursing, and research personnel at the associate-senior level or above, including 3 doctors with senior professional titles, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 2 master’s supervisors. All personnel at the associate-senior level or above have completed at least 1 year of overseas training, with study and research locations across the United States and Europe. Many professors hold principal or deputy positions in various societies at the international/Asian, Chinese (national), Hubei Provincial, and Wuhan Municipal levels. For example, Professor Wu Min serves as Deputy Head of the Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Group of the Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeons Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Deputy Head of the Basic Research Group of the Plastic Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and Vice President of the Endoscopic Plastic Surgery Branch of the Medical Cosmetology Professional Committee of the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine. Professor Zeng Ning serves as Deputy Chair of the Plastic Surgery Branch of the Hubei Medical Association, Deputy Chair of the Rhinoplasty Committee of the Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Branch of the Association of Integrative Medicine, and a member of the Breast Aesthetics Group of the Medical Aesthetics and Cosmetology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Professor Ren Yuping serves as Deputy Chair of the Postpartum Rehabilitation and Cosmetology Professional Committee of the Hubei Maternal and Child Health Association. Professor Liu Jiafeng serves as Deputy Head of the Ear Reconstruction Group of the Plastic Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. The department’s specialized subspecialties include a series of breast-plastic procedures, ear plastic surgery, eye and nose plastic surgery, hair transplantation, comprehensive scar treatment, dermatological photoelectric therapy, as well as diagnostic and treatment services including complex wound reconstruction, reconstruction of external organs, facial rejuvenation surgery, facial-feature contouring surgery, and minimally invasive plastic surgery. Breast plastic surgery is at a leading first-class level domestically and enjoys an excellent reputation. The department’s standards in eye, ear, nose, and photoelectric treatment are first-class in Central China. The department performs more than 6000 operations annually and receives more than 13 thousand outpatient visits. Its scientific research achievements are outstanding: from 2020 to the present, it has published a total of 120 SCI articles, with a total score of 500 points, including 6 articles scoring above 10 points and 60 articles scoring above 5 points; three articles in PRS, the top journal of plastic and cosmetic surgery, and three in ASJ. More than ten national and provincial/municipal projects, including National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, have been approved. Statistics are current as of May 2025.
