Trauma Surgery Department

The Department of Trauma Surgery of Tongji Hospital was established in 1990 and is a large comprehensive trauma emergency and rescue center specializing in the treatment of severe multiple trauma and critically ill trauma patients. It currently has 10 holders of doctoral degrees in surgery, 3 postdoctoral fellows; 2 professors and doctoral supervisors; 4 chief physicians; and 9 associate professors and master’s supervisors, most of whom returned to China after studying in Europe and the United States. The Department of Trauma Surgery currently has 76 beds (3 trauma resuscitation beds, 15 trauma observation beds, 10 trauma ICU beds, and 49 trauma ward beds). It is a large, comprehensive, specialized trauma treatment center established strictly according to the American trauma emergency model, incorporating numerous specialties, including neurosurgery, general surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, orthopedics, surgical critical care, trauma rehabilitation, and many others, and has launched an integrated rapid comprehensive trauma emergency and rescue system following the pathway prehospital emergency care→emergency surgery→operating room→trauma ICU→trauma surgery ward care. It can currently enroll doctoral and master’s graduate students in trauma surgery and sports medicine, and undertakes the teaching of graduate and undergraduate students in emergency medicine, trauma surgery, and sports medicine.

Over the years, adhering to the principle of combining clinical practice with basic research, the Department of Trauma Surgery of Tongji Hospital has addressed difficult clinical problems, including severe trauma, multiple trauma, severe pelvic fractures, trauma complicated by severe infection, MODS, nutritional disorders, and others. It has focused on the specialized, systematic treatment of multiple trauma; comprehensive treatment of critically ill trauma patients; immunomodulatory therapy, nutritional support, and “early intervention” therapy for patients with trauma-related MODS; and other areas. It has saved the lives of numerous patients with severe trauma, greatly improved the quality of treatment and patients’ quality of life, and taken the lead within the province in establishing the Hubei Provincial Trauma Database, covering dozens of large and medium-sized hospitals throughout the province. The Department of Trauma Surgery of Tongji Hospital has accumulated abundant materials for the further development of trauma medicine research. It has established a specialized laboratory of 60m2, equipped with a CO2 cell culture incubator, ultra-clean workbench, PCR instrument, electrophoresis apparatus, high-speed low-temperature centrifuge, deep-low-temperature freezer, and other instruments and equipment, and can conduct most molecular biology, biochemistry, histochemistry, and immunology experiments.
