The Department of Oncology of Tongji Hospital Affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology was established in 1958 and is the earliest oncology specialty department established in a general hospital in China. After nearly 60 years of pioneering development and innovation, the Department of Oncology of Tongji Hospital has developed into one of the largest and academically strongest oncology medical, teaching, and research bases in Central China. In the 2015 China Hospital Science and Technology Influence Ranking for Oncology, it ranked 7th nationwide and 1st in Central-South China. After the Sino-French New City campus opened in mid-September 2016, the Department of Oncology of Tongji Hospital was the first to establish a diagnostic and treatment layout covering Wuhan’s three towns, both banks, and three sites. The number of operational beds in medical oncology has reached more than 700, and the department has a range of internationally leading radiotherapy equipment, including 6 accelerators and 4 CT simulation-positioning machines, and will introduce Central China’s first Speed Knife and the province’s first Gemstone accelerator, representing the most cutting-edge technology in the international radiotherapy field. Treatment outcomes for common tumors such as lung cancer, gastrointestinal tumors, head and neck tumors, breast cancer, gynecologic tumors, and genitourinary tumors have reached a leading level in China. The Department of Oncology of Tongji Hospital has robust research strength and outstanding achievements. In recent years, our department has conducted more than 70 clinical studies; over the past 5 years, it has undertaken a total of 45 national-level and provincial- and ministerial-level basic research projects, and has published more than 130 SCI papers as first or corresponding author. The research team led by Professor Yuan Xianglin has published more than 10 high-quality articles in top international journals such as JCO, Cell, Nature Cell Biology, and cancer discovery. The Department of Oncology of Tongji Hospital has more than 300 staff members, including more than 80 physician staff members, of whom 25 have senior professional titles, 5 are doctoral supervisors, 12 are master’s supervisors, and 58 hold doctoral degrees; more than half have studied at renowned universities and research institutions abroad. It has a number of renowned experts with profound expertise and high academic influence in oncology; they hold important positions in various national, provincial, and municipal oncology academic organizations. The Department of Oncology of Tongji Hospital has a profound historical heritage, strong technical capabilities, advanced medical equipment, and a well-established talent team; at the same time, medical care, education, and research are developing in a comprehensive and coordinated manner.
