General Gynecology

The Department of Gynecology of Tongji Hospital was among the first batch of national-level key disciplines and clinical key specialties of the Ministry of Health, and is one of the first nationally authorized sites for awarding master’s and doctoral degrees in a first-level discipline. It is currently, among other things, the National Clinical Research Center for Obstetric and Gynecologic Diseases (one of only three hospitals nationwide), a Ministry of Health residency physician training base, one of the first national Level-IV gynecologic endoscopic-surgery training bases established by the Ministry of Health, a national continuing-education base for obstetrics and gynecology, and a Ministry of Health drug clinical-trial base. The Obstetrics and Gynecology course offered by the department was recognized as a national-level high-quality course and a model bilingual-teaching course. The department is the designated host institution for the Hubei Provincial Gynecology Quality Control Center and the Hubei Provincial Women’s Pelvic Floor and Reproductive Health Quality Control Center, and is among the first batch of national units established to develop distinctive menopause-health specialties. The department currently has 53 physicians on staff, including 9 with senior professional titles, 23 with associate-senior professional titles, 15 attending physicians, and 6 resident physicians; 13 postgraduate supervisors; and a nursing team of 74, including 1 deputy chief nurse, 54 nurse supervisors, 14 nurses, and 5 junior nurses. A total of 26 experts hold positions in academic teams in the Asia-Pacific region and China, and more than 30 hold positions in academic teams within the province. The department has recipients of national-level talent programs, national-level young-talent programs, the Chutian Scholars program, the Huazhong Scholars program, Hubei Young Top Talents programs, the Wuhan Chenguang Plan, and many other talent programs. The department’s three campuses have a total of 160 open beds. Approximately more than 8,000 patients are admitted annually, and the annual surgical volume exceeds 6,000 procedures. The department has a gynecology laboratory capable of conducting various forms of basic research; its clinical testing and research capabilities have reached a leading level in China. In recent years, it has made unremitting efforts to strengthen quality management, improve service quality, and develop advanced clinical technologies; it has repeatedly been named a Hospital Civilized Unit and has received unanimous praise from all sectors of society. Professor Sun Chaoyang, the current academic leader, is a recipient of the 2025 Young Scientists Fund (Category A), formerly known as the National Distinguished Young Scientists Fund. He serves as a member of the Youth Group of the Gynecologic Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and as a member and secretary of the Gynecologic Oncology Branch of the Hubei Medical Association. He has been engaged in clinical and scientific research on the precision diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic malignant tumors for more than 10 years, making outstanding contributions to improving the comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic efficacy for patients with gynecologic tumors, improving patient outcomes, and preserving reproductive capacity. As first or corresponding author, he has published more than 30 research articles in Lancet (2024), Nature Genetics (2023, 2024), Lancet Oncology (2023a, 2023b), Cancer Cell (2019, 2018), and other journals. He has received the 2024 Huaxia Medical Youth Science and Technology Award, the First Prize in Natural Sciences of the 2021 China Maternal and Child Health Science and Technology Award, and the First Prize of the 2022 Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. Over the past 10 years, the department has undertaken 8 projects, including major special projects concerning the four major chronic diseases and projects under the 14th Five-Year Plan Key R&D Program; 1 National International Science and Technology Cooperation Special Project of the Ministry of Science and Technology; 1 National Natural Science Foundation of China Youth Project (Category A); 1 National Natural Science Foundation of China Youth Project (Category B); 26 National Natural Science Foundation projects; and 24 provincial-level foundation projects. It has compiled more than 10 monographs in obstetrics and gynecology and, as first or corresponding author, has published more than 220 research articles in Lancet (2024), Nature Genetics (2023, 2024), Lancet Oncology (2023a, 2023b), Cancer Cell (2019, 2018), Nature Aging (2024), and other journals. It has been granted 10 patents and 10 software copyrights. As the National Clinical Research Center for Obstetric and Gynecologic Diseases, it has initiated and undertaken multiple multicenter clinical trials covering ovarian aging, pelvic-floor functional restoration, the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis and uterine fibroids, and preservation of reproductive function in patients with malignant tumors, and has broad influence in the field of female reproductive-function preservation. It has received 3 National Science and Technology Progress Awards, Second Prize; the First Prize of the Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Award, the First Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award, and the First Prize of the Achievement Promotion Award, one of each; the 2024 Huaxia Medical Youth Science and Technology Award; the First Prize in Natural Sciences of the 2021 China Maternal and Child Health Science and Technology Award; and the First Prize of the 2022 Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. The Department of Gynecology of Tongji Hospital has twice been designated a national-level key discipline. While completing its clinical and scientific-research work to a high standard, the department actively pursues teaching reform. Relying on advanced clinical and scientific-research platforms, it has established a Medical Student Innovation Base to provide opportunities for students with an innovative mindset. The gynecology teaching team has been approved for multiple university- and institution-level teaching funds; many teachers have received teaching-quality awards, awards in the National Multimedia Courseware Competition, the Huazhong University of Science and Technology Three Educations Award, and the title of Three Educations Activist. The team has participated in compiling multiple sets of obstetrics and gynecology textbooks and has published several teaching papers. It has participated in compiling 3 textbooks, including Obstetrics and Gynecology (textbook for international students and bilingual teaching; deputy editor-in-chief). Over the past three years, it has trained 29 master’s students and 15 doctoral students. The department has consistently undertaken the teaching of large gynecology theory lectures and clinical internships for students in all specialties; it undertakes bilingual teaching and clinical teaching for the eight-year clinical medicine program, international students, and the German-language class, as well as teaching clinical observation and internships under the mentor system for the eight-year clinical program. Drawing on advanced teaching concepts in China and abroad and combining them with practical experience in teaching reform, the department has established an online/offline blended-teaching approach on the basis of introducing PBL, Sandwich, Fish bowl, OSCE, and other teaching and assessment methods. In 2018, the team of principal lecturers participated in putting a MOOC course of Huazhong University of Science and Technology online on China University MOOC.
