The department’s team currently comprises 3 chief physicians, 4 deputy chief physicians, 4 doctors with doctoral degrees, 4 with master’s degrees, and 2 inheritors of National Famous Veteran Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctors’ Studios; many members have undertaken further training and study at renowned hospitals in China and abroad.
The Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology of Zhejiang Provincial Tongde Hospital is a key medical discipline of Zhejiang Province, a renowned traditional Chinese medicine department of the province, and a key discipline of the hospital. Orthopedics and Traumatology Department II (Joint Surgery) is a designated unit for the construction of enhanced recovery in the Orthopedic Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, with joint diseases and sports injuries as its specialties. It has undertaken more than 10 national-, provincial-, and departmental-level research projects and published more than 20 SCI papers.
The main advanced technologies of Orthopedics and Traumatology Department II (Joint Surgery) include: In joint surgery: it routinely performs hip and knee arthroplasty and revision surgery, articular cartilage transplantation and repair, limb correction, shoulder and elbow arthroplasty, hip- and knee-preserving treatments, and other procedures. Its technical advantages are prominent. These treatments are used for adult developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), aseptic necrosis of the femoral head, femoral neck fractures, severe knee deformities, osteoarthritis, and comminuted fractures of the shoulder and elbow, among others. The department also performs minimally invasive total hip and total knee arthroplasty, with its technology at an advanced level within the province. In sports medicine: guided by “enhanced recovery and function first,” its work focuses on sports injuries and repair. Its treatment and research in degenerative joint diseases, cartilage injury and repair, ligament rupture and reconstruction, and tissue transplantation have reached an advanced level in China. It performs various arthroscopic procedures, including rotator cuff repair, labral repair for recurrent shoulder dislocation, meniscal repair and plasty, and cruciate ligament reconstruction. In joint trauma: AO techniques and minimally invasive biological fixation techniques are used to treat periarticular fractures, complex intra-articular fractures, and bone and soft-tissue defects; arthroscopy is also used to assist in the treatment of intra-articular fractures. For hip fractures in older adults, minimally invasive techniques are used, resulting in less surgical trauma and good postoperative recovery of joint function. In surgical procedures, the department was the first to introduce the concept of enhanced recovery and has applied it extensively to all orthopedic surgeries, enabling patients to recover more quickly.
With inheritors of the Zhang bone-setting technique as its core, the department uses integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine to treat various osteoarticular diseases. Fractures are treated with nonoperative therapies such as manual reduction, fir-bark splint fixation, syndrome-differentiated treatment with traditional Chinese medicines, and external application of medicinal plasters. At the same time, it carries out various techniques, including acupoint application of traditional Chinese medicines, traditional Chinese medicine foot baths, auricular acupressure with seeds, hot compresses with traditional Chinese medicines, and acupuncture analgesia, to promote rapid patient recovery.
